I really really like the Smart Search feature. I have been able to figure out siblings of relatives that I was not aware of this way.

I love it!!

Hi all just downloaded the new beta program and I think I am really going to like it. I have only gotten to the map today, but it is nice the places come up and for one of the first time I changed names of places easily. In the beginning I started with abbreviations for the states and then wanted to not do that and spell out the complete name. This was easy to do in this program. I also think the new picture program is really going to be fun and nice!

Hi Catherine, Douglas, Caro, Mary, Sherry and all

Sorry for being out of the loop but as you may read in my blog (http://www.genealogywise.com/profiles/blogs/myheritage-genealogy-and) I'm making all the final arrangement for my US Tour ;)

I love to see all the enthusiasm on MyHeritage users and thought it was time for me to clarify a few things regarding research opportunities at MyHeritage and how they work.

Here is a quick guide to the different opportunities for a MyHeritage member to research family names:

The Research tool at MyHeritage www.myheritage.com/research is the world’s first “Google for Genealogy”. We have compiled over 1400 genealogy-related databases and websites to allow you to search family names in one go. The Research tool searches in databases from around the world and includes most of the largest and most popular databases on the net today and it doesn’t cost anything to use.

When you get back results and want to view them you are taken to the specific site where those results reside. At that point in time you may be asked by the other website to pay to view the results. Ancestry charges to view their results, for example. It is completely at the discretion of the site that owns the results whether or not to charge to access them.

SmartResearch technology (a Premium feature available only in our family tree software Family Tree Builder) also works on the same “Google for Genealogy” concept. SmartResearch is a very special feature that searches the names in your family tree in the background while you work on the tree. You don’t have to do anything and SmartResearch will find names for you and display the results.

Again, SmartResearch searches in databases which are not owned by MyHeritage and you may be asked to pay to view results.

Some people might say, “Why should I pay for this feature if I’m going to have to pay again?”

The benefit of SmartResearch is the time and effort saved by having to go through every name in the tree and research one-by-one. Think of having to research 1000 names in 1400 different sites and databases. It would take a very long time. Just for fun I did the calculation; if I had 1000 people in my tree and wanted to search in 1400 databases, allotting an hour search time for each name it would take me 159 YEARS.

SmartMatching is a free service offered to MyHeritage.com members who have a family site and family tree. SmartMatching goes over the names in your family tree, compares them to the more than 300 million names in family trees on MyHeritage.com and displays any matches between your tree and other members’ trees.

SmartMatching has helped many people find ancestors they thought they had lost track of. One of the things people comment upon most frequently in regard to SmartMatching is that there is a real person at the other end of the research information. It is easier to verify information, most times members get much more information than they originally expected and the contact with someone else who might be a distant relation is especially rewarding. (Kudos to Douglas for offering to help.)

In addition the Genealogy Center at MyHeritage allows you to search the family sites at MyHeritage for family names in our members’ trees. However, names of living people are privatized to protect our members’ privacy.

There are also lots of enhancements at MyHeritage.com, such as mobile photo uploads, new photo tagging, new slideshows and also the new events section that were released for all users completely free of charge. A new version of Family Tree Builder is set to be released very soon. It also has many new free features such as photo album management and integration with Google maps.

Currently, free basic family site subscriptions allow up to 250 people in the family tree and give you 250MB of storage space for photos and documents.

Please don't stop commenting and sharing your experience with MyHeritage. Only from your input we learn and change to be betters for you.

Best regards to all

MyHeritage also can and will be posted if you decide you want it to be viewed. It does however compare other sites that have same or similar facts and notifies you of these names etc... Remember, it is Free up to 250 names, Ancestry.com is not. They both are great sites and if you have both then you are aware of the differences and cost. But for those who are new and or curious of starting a Family Tree then MyHeritage.com is Highly recommend due to being free for up to 250 names listed on the site.

Catherine: I do that too! I love the book reports! It puts everything in such a clear and organized manner. My only problem is the fact that, for me, its nearly 200 pages so I can't just print it out lol

Mary: YES!! You should definitely post your tree there. Not only will you be able to see if anyone else can help you, but your tree can also help others in their search. I don't know what I would do without the courtesy of others on Ancestry who posted their trees and made them public. They are certainly life savers for me! And if anyone is living, their information isn't posted, so there's no need to worry about that.

I too, started my tree with My Heritage and have really enjoyed it. I like the smart match feature and use it quite a lot. Am also a member of Ancestry, but do not have my tree posted there. Should I post it there as well?

I have both Ancestry and MyHeritage.
