Getting Started!

Welcome and thank you for supporting Most Wanted.

Please post your challenge to the Most Wanted! Discussion Forum
Click here: Post your Most Wanted/Brick Wall/Broken Link Challenge

There seems to be an RSS feed advantage to posting challenges to the Most Wanted "Discussion Forum" rather than on the "Comment Wall." It's also easier to keep responses and attachments organized if a challenge is posted as a Discussion. Twenty challenges appear on this page; click "View All" to browse the collection and to subscribe to the RSS feed.

In addition to the link above, "Post your Most Wanted ... Challenge," you will find a "Start Discussion" button located on this page at the end of the items in the section that follows "Getting Started."

An idea for anyone who's stuck: If you know where your lost ancestor is buried, try the cemetery records and see who is buried near them. It has helped me find out how people connect up in cases where I am able to look through those records.

Thank you GeneJ for this group. I always find it really interesting to hear how other people are solving their lost ancestor cases.

For James Hopper: Have you tried searching records for Hooper? Here in Tennessee, the surnames Hopper & Hooper are used interchangeably; and often an ancestor will be erroneously listed that way. The Goins here in Tennessee were mostly Melungeon; and their records are very scarce.

And so on to my Wife's main stone wall. Luther Moyer Mourer was born February 21, 1856 in Mifflinburg, Union Co., PA and died March 23, 1926 in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA. Luther married Ida Alice "Allie" Logan July 14, 1879 in Findlay, Handcock Co., OH. Luther gave his name as Luther M. Mowrer at that time. Luther had a half brother named Jacob V. Mohr who was born in about 1849 in Mifflinburg, Union Co., PA and died in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA. Jacob married Jennie C. in probably Stella, Richardson Co., NE about 1880. I have both Luther and Jacob in every census possible execpt the 1850 census where I haven't found Jacob. The problem again is who are their parents? In 1860 they are both found in a home who's head of household is named Moore. I realize that Moore is or can be the English spelling of Mohr but would like better proof. In 1870 both Luther and Jacob are living in the household of a widow lady but I have not found out a relationship between her and the boys. I would like proof that Mr. Moore is really Mr. Mohr and that Mrs. Moore was previously Mrs. Mourer.

Anna (Goin) Hopper where are your parents? Anna Goin is my great grandmother. She was born in Claiborne Co., TN in about 1832. She died there in May 1899. He husband, William Houston Hopper was born in Claiborne Co., TN in 1831 and died April 25, 1863 in Louisville, KY while serving in the Union Army during the Civli War. He died of small pox not of war wounds and is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, KY. I have located both William and Anna in every census possible and thanks to a cousin, I have both William's Civil War military records and Anna's Civil War Widow's Pension file. Her file shows that about every male Goin in the family I feel she is part of signed one or another document in the file either as witness or Justice of the Peace. Anna is most likely the daughter of one of three Goin males all of whom were related. The choices are "Old Uriah" Goin (1785-abt. 1863) and his first wife L., Uriah Goin (abt 1802-abt. 1845) and his wife Nancy Dixson/Dickson/Dickenson. This Uriah was a nephew of Old Uriah and to complicate matters even more this Nancy Dixson was Old Uriah's second wife. The third Goin male was Levi Goin (abt. 1810-abt. 1865) and his wife Elizabeth Pritchard. This Levi Goin is Old Uriah's son. In his letter, written in 1855, Eli Goin tells his brother Isaac Goin all the local news about "Old Uriah" and his sons and sons-in-law. Houston Hopper is mentioned in that context. The stone wall is the fact that this Anna Goin isn't listed in any list of children of these three men and every Goin researcher I have been in touch with says they don't know this Anna. The known books about Goin history in Claiborne Co., TN don't mention her.
Comment by CaryAnn Turner Hess on July 20, 2009 at 12:47pm
George William Turner was b. Feb. 1860 at Missouri and d. 27 Mar 1932 at St. Joseph, Washington Twp., Buchanan, Missouri. He m. Delilah Catherine Toothman on 26 Jun 1886 at St. Joseph, Buchanan, Missouri. They had a total of eight children, with five living on the 1880 census. I have been told that there is a relationship with the Crosswhite’s, possibly cousins, but I can’t find anything yet.

With all this information, one would think I could find his parents. But, alas, NO! There are 80 George W. Turners born in Missouri in 1860, then add a year on either side and it’s well over 100. After checking all the states census records, I still cannot find his parents or any siblings if any.

I have been looking at ALL the Turner’s in Missouri systematically , one by one, eliminating families. I even thought I had a great possibility, only to find it wasn’t my George :( I am thinking of the possibility that his parent’s may have died and left him and hopefully some siblings, with others.

Grandpa Turner never knew his grandparents and on George’s death cert. Ukn is listed for both his father and mother, with his daughter providing the information. No one in the family talked about this side of the family, as they didn’t have much information.

Any ideas? This is my paternal direct line, so I really would love to know more.
P.S. I’ve checked for wills, probates, land records, anything I can think of to find his parents.

Does Henry L.Yearby continue to appear in the records? If so, there are two possibilities: death and divorce.

If you are able to do actual on the ground research in Worth County, Georgia, you might look for an Affidavit of Heirship which could clear up the mystery.

My brickwall is my gr.gr.gr. grandmother Elizabeth Jane Roberts. I believe at this time she is from another planet can't be sure. She was born in Jones Co. Ga. Married my grandfather Henry L. Yearby in Jones Co. Ga. Then after 1870 she fanished from Worth Co. GA. HELPPPPPPPPPP!

I'm looking for my great grandparents Robert J. Sanders and his wife Lula Blackwell. I've found them on the 1880 census in Clay, Lafayette, Missouri, but nowhere else. Robert was born about 1855 in Kentucky and Lula was born about 1855 in Virginia. Their son, John Lewis Sanders b. 1877, was my mother's father.

I am completely stuck on Albert J Coss b. abt 1864 in Pennsylvania. He lived in Seattle from around 1897--presumably in the Seattle area until his death. Here he is in the 1910 census with his second wife: http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/ViewRecord.aspx?RID=B3224F31B688E83A330356D6D68F85AD.

As far as I know, he had little to no contact with his two sons, Albert and Ronald, after they were 6 years old (probably lost contact much earlier). Their mother, Susan Jeannette Morrin b. 27 Apr 1877, d. 29 Jan 1947 in San Francisco remarried several times and the boys' surname was changed to Ludwig after her marriage to Theodore Ludwig.

Edited.
