Welcome Debby-

Can you tell us what records and information you already have for Walter that may help us find his parents? I am finding him and his family in census records that indicate that he and his parents were born in DE, and his wife Margaret was born in New Jersey?

Do you have an obituary/death record for Walter?

thank you!
Kate
Hi Debby-

I have found a brief death notice for Walter Warren in 1899 on Genealogybank. I also found what I believe to be Margaret's death record on FamilySearchLabs. I will post the information from the death record shortly if you need it.
I definitely would like her death record, from my info she died on 6-3-1892.. I have the death info on Walter, but another piece of the puzzle always helps.

I will get to the info you asked for in the next few days, ok?

Thanks for help, but I honestly think Walter was the first test tube baby.

Hi Debby-

One thing to look at is the 1820 census for Delaware, do a search for the Warren surname, and there are several Warrens listed in the Murderkill Hundred township in Kent County. Possibly you can eliminate those Warrens who did not have a son around Walter's age?

From the Philadelphia Inquirer:

Capt Walter Warren, aged 90 years, of 735 Berkley street, who spent 50 years of his life as a master of sea-going vessels, will be buried at Leesburg, N.J., on August 4.

According to the death record for Margaret, she died June 5, 1892, of 'general debility' (aka Old Age)
She was in her 76th year. She was to be buried at Leesburg, NJ. Her parents are not listed, but her place of birth is New Jersey. She lived at 1335 S. 6th St. She was buried June 7, 1892.

One other thought, do you know what religion they practiced? If they were Quakers, there may be some records for them in Meeting Records.

Hi Debby:

A couple of items you and Kate may already have seen:

(1) Have attached 1840 and 1850 census for Walter Warren at Murderkill Hundred, Kent Co., Delaware.
In the 1840 census, Walter Warren as HOH, appears there is more than one family at the residence (residence includes three males ae 20-30, two young, but adult, females).
In the 1850 census, Walter Warren household; he is a 40 year old farmer, born Delaware; real estate valued at 1500; there are two daus in the home over 10, several children under 10 yrs of age including eldest known son Charles, ae 7, just younger son, Walter, ae 5, and baby son, Jesse, ae 10/12.

See Linda L. Green, _Delaware 1850-1860 Agricultural Census_ ( [?] : Willow Bend (Heritage Books), 2004), pp. 1 and 24, explanations and 1850 entry for Walter Warren:

They include name of owner, improved acreage, unimproved acreage, cash value of the farm, value of farm implements and machinery, and value of livestock. This volume includes the counties of Kent, New Castle, and Sussex."

Note: I had a hard time locating this "1850-1860" title in WorldCat. It may be the WorldCat title, "Delaware Agricultural Census"

(2) Place “Murderkill hundred”
According to FHL Catalog, in 1867, Murderkill hundred was divided into North Murderkill Hundred and South Murderkill Hundred.

(8) Spotted one or more references to a “John W. Warren” of Murderkill, seemed same era as your Walter Warren. Wondered if you have ever found clues about a _full_ name for Walter Warren.

**Some research notes from Thomas Hale Streets, _Samuel Griffin, of New Castle County on the Delaware, Planter_ (1905); digital images, _GoogleBooks_ …

Comments include note that a John Warren of Murderkill owned 1500 acres when he died in 1808. Perhaps if the grantor-grantee indexes or probate files aren’t fruitful, comparing some of the Murderkill plat maps will help you to learn if Warren’s land came from the land of this early John Warren/Elizabeth Griffen.

In this Griffin genealogy, insight into the early Warren family of Kent County, Delaware is provided, entry pp. 106-108, entry for Elizabeth (#64) Griffin/Griffith, m. 10 May 1780 to John Warren (1757-1803), son of Benjamin Warren.

The Griffen text list the eleven children born to John and Elizabeth(Griffith [Griffin]) Warren, all of whom are numbered and followed. Sons who survived to adulthood appear: Benjamin, Samuel, ?John (unmarried), William (unmarried), Charles (had 13 children, but notes that names of only 12 are provided), George (d. 1818).
Of Elizabeth (Griffith [Griffin]) Warren. "As an heir of Owen Griffith, 200 acres of her grandfather's estate, located in North MurderKill hundred, were assigned to her as her share. Of this land, 120 acres are described .... At her grandmother's death in 1781, she received 136 acres of her land." Text goes on to report about the will of this Elizabeth (Griffith [Griffin]) Warren, proved 1807 in which she bequeathed to her two youngest children (inc. George Warren), her property in North Murderkill hundred.
About husband, John Warren, various comments including, "The land on which the Camden Friends' Meeting House is build was conveyed, 12 May 1760, to a body of trustees, among whom was a Benjamin Warren, who is supposed to have been the grandfather of John Waren." Author continues, "John Warren died intestate, and letters of administration on his estate were granted 13 December 1803 The division of his real estate shows that he died possessed of nearly 1500 acres of land.
Author notes that much of the Warren information came from a Mrs. Sarah A. Warren of near Fenton Delaware, "since dead."
On p 156, author begins coverage of the sons of John and Elizabeth (Griffith) Warren.

You found the correct WARREN with Margaret Pritchard, that is their family.
I and a friend ( genealogy) looked into the Griffin family and that is not related to mine.
I think I forgot to mention that Walter Warren, Sr, had two brothers Samuel and Hamilton.

Debby
You wrote, "...correct WARREN ...."

Great. Would seem the 1840 census also has reason, right, as it reports three males in the same age group residing in the home.

Yippee... have a clue for you. Please let me know if you have ruled out these connections. More to report about the clue, a few items here. --GJ

You wrote, "....Walter Warren, Sr, had two brothers Samuel and Hamilton."

(1) A Hamilton Warren resides at 1850 with Dorcas Sherlock/Shirlock at Philadelphia
Interesting census at Philadelphia Cedar Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at 1850. Age of Hamilton perhaps is a bit off, but all noteworthy. See Ancestry.com for 1850 census entry indexed as "Hamilton Warren" born Delaware, ae 25; head of household indexed as Dorcus Sherlock [but enumeration appears Shirlock], ae 47, b. Delaware (ca 1803), various apparent Sherlock children appear in the enumeration, ae 22 to 12 (eldest is a Samuel Sherlock, ae 22), however Hamilton Warren is listed before the apparent Sherlock (Shirlock) children. The two older Sherlock children, Samuel, ae 22 and Mary, ae 17, were reported born at Delaware, while the four younger children were reported born at Pennsylvania. Of those born at Pennsylvania, John is the eldest, ae 14, "in bookbinding." Just younger than John are apparent twins, "Catharine" and Alice, ae 13; youngest is Robt Shirlock, ae 12.

This same Dorcus Sherlock seems the woman at same PA location in 1840 ("Dorcas Sherlock"; Philadelphia Cedar Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

(2) IGI has submitted marriage entry for a "Dorcus McBride" married 09 Mar 1822 at "New Castle, Delaware" to "Hamilton Warron." [FamilySearch.org]

(3) I have been able to follow the man who seems Dorcus' son Samuel Sherlock/Shirlock through some additional census and PA death records (FamilySearch Labs). Will report more separately. In particular, "Samuel Shirlock" has a son Walter Shirlock dec'd 06 Feb 1870 at Philadelphia, buried there, Cedar Hill Burial Grounds [Family Search Labs, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia City Death Certificates, 1803-1915]. Samuel himself perhaps the man died at Philadelphia [same source], 09 Sept 1894, ae 63 y, 4 mos; he was a married brickmaker, buried North Cedar Hill Cemetery. I'll work on the latter entry a bit more as the "Undertaker's Certificate" to that Samuel's death record reports he was b. Philadelphia.
Samuel Shirlock, decd 9 Sept 1894, Philadelphia

Research notes ... nothing conclusive from these items:
Philadelphia Inquirer, ed. of 13 Sept 1894, as p. 7, "Died," for Samuel Shirlock death notice, in full, below:

SHIRLOCK -- Suddenly, on Septermber 9, 1894,
Samuel Shirlock, aged 64 years.
The relatives and friends of the family are
respectfully invited to attend the funeral, on
Thursday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from his late
residence, 4613 Tackawanna street, Frankford.
Interment at North Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Same notice appeared 11 Sept 1894 and 12 Sept 1894.

Have located what seems a marriage notice about one of this Samuel's sons. Will post separately.
A few more items for the research log.

Uploading 1880 census for Samuel Shirlock, 3 Jun 1880, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is ae 48, a laborer b. Delaware; wife is Margaret, ae 46, b. PA/PA/PA. Quire a few step children and three boarders reside in the home; also there are Diller Shirlock, ae 9, a son; Almon Shirlock, ae 5, a son; both born PA/PA/PA (sic ... I imagine).

See Philadelphia Inquirer, ed. of 12 Dec 1897, "Society" (page 34), far right column, entry begins, "On Tuesday evening, Miss Amanda Remmey ... was marrid to Mr. Diller Baldwin Shirlock." Comments the marriage was performed by Rev. F. G. Coxon, ppaster of the Frankford Avenue M. E. Church. Reports the bride and groom will "reside on West Rhawn street, Holmesburg."
