I agree with you that both the surname and the census reports are significant. You wrote, "...can't seem to locate Reddn in the 1870 census....James Lee WEAVER family narrative... 1869 deeded all his property ...."
Will I be able to google and find the Weaver narrative? Humm... appt'd son in law, rather than son, to manage his property?

Okay... I just deleted what I wanted to edit. : (
Here goes.
Everton’s Online database at _World Vital Records_ has a 1992 FGS for William Barwick and Elizabeth Phillips (sources for wife includes comment, “Last name may have been Manning … had several descendants with middle name Manning). Compiler is a Tully from Jacksonville, Florida; indicates research into the family is ongoing. FGS reports 15 children to William and Elizabeth including youngest, Redden Barwick m. Nancy Wiggins. Of the 15 children, five intermarried with a Whiddon family. In the notes to the FGS, compiler writes, “As you can see, the Barwicks and Whiddons inter-married … a lot. Wherever one family went, the other followed. They travelled in packs.”
Sources listed for the children (not further referenced) are:
S. O. Barwick book
Records of Eloise K Barwick
Washington Co., GA guardianship bonds
History of Dale Co., AL
History of Henry Co., AL
SC, NC, MS IGI
“Gillis and Other Related Families”
1810-1820 Darlington SC census
1830 Washington Co., GA census
1840 Henry Co., AL census
1850 -60 Emanuel Co., GA census
Numerous other researchers and descendants.

Here is a summary of the Barwick/Widdon intermarriages noted:
Nathan Barwick m. Elizabeth Whiddon
James Barwick m1 Eleanora Whiddon
Martha Rhoda Barwick m. Dempsey Whiddon
John J. Barwick m2 Susannah Whiddon
Sarah Barwick m. Willilam Whiddon

There were two non Whiddon marriages reptd for Redden’s sisters:
Rebecca Whiddon m. Clay Truitt
Winna Barwick m. --- Blackshear

On the case—GJ.
Hey GJ! You've been BUSY!:-)

I too thought Redden's relationship with the WHIDDONS was interesting but had no idea there were so many Barwick-Whiddon marriages!

I remember reading in the Weaver narrative that when Redden first arrived in Henry Co., he boarded with Bill Whiddon while he cleared his land. Then he left, went back to Georgia, got married (bride WIGGINS) and returned to Henry Co. with his wife & in-laws.

In the 1870 Census there are 2 households of WIGGINS at dwelling # 104 & 105. My Grandfather, Cary Barwick was in dwelling #117.

In the 1880 Census, Redden is living between a younger WIGGINS family & his son-in-law, J Lisenby.

One other note, the reason why Redden deeded everything over to his Wife & Daughters in 1869 is because his Son, William, died in the war 1865.

Boy can't the evidence just surface already?!:-)

Luckie
GJ - look at this Reconstructed Federal Land Tract Book for Henry County. We have BARWICKS, WIGGINS & WHIDDONS all represented!

Great responses; great resource, too. Thanks.
I tend to use a fair amount of work with naming and migration patterns.
1840 Census, Henry County, Alabama (roll 6, p. 157, fourth line from the bottom). entry for Readen? Barwick; reports 11 in the household; no reported slaves. the census is _not_ in alpha order; there are a few slave holders reported on the same census page, and on the following page, but only a few.
If I get a chance, I'll trace what I can of the Wiggins and Whiddons at Henry County; seem to be four at Henry County in one 1840 index: Daniel, Elijah, Israel and Joshua.
The 1830 census for Redden Barwick at Henry County also does not report any slave holdings. Seven others on the same census page do report slave holdings. Ditto, will look at Wiggins and Widdons separately.
I'm still bothered that I can't find Redden at 1870. More later -GJ
Hi GJ! I seem to remember finding Redden in 1870 living with his son-in-law, Lisenby? Maybe - I'll check!

Here is the link that led me to believe Redden owned slaves in 1840, although when I looked at his male/females in the home, I netted with the same census total - 11.

Cheers,

Attached are the images from HQ. I put some little red circles around what seem to be "connections" that suggest the images were bound as facing pages. Of course that doesn't mean there wasn't a problem.
On the other hand, I haven't found slaves reported for Redden in my read of his 1830, 1850 and 1860 census.
There are two older males reported in housedhold, as recorded for the 1840 census, but only one adult female.
Hope these help. More later. --GJ

Thanks GJ! I swear the man is a MYSTERY to me! Tons of land, very active farmer but NO record of owning slaves?! Then post-emancipation, the only TWO Black/Mulatto Barwick Families in Henry County just happen to live close to his relatives?

Redden man {from the grave}, help me out here?!:-)

Luckie.
Luckie -

The 1855 Alabama state census lists "R. Barwick" as having two slaves. No more information than that. But it is something.

Also checked the 1850 AL state census - he owned no slaves, but there were 11 inhabitants listed in the columns and only 10 in the "total" column.
Michael - for me this is HUGE! It's the first time we've been able to confirm Redden Barwick as a slave owner!

GJ & I have gone back and forth on the 1840 Census & whether everyone reported was white and free.

Let me go back to the 1850 Census & look at those totals. What are you thinking the discrepancy could mean?

As always, much appreciated!:-)

Luckie.
