Information on Susanna Lewis - Henrico County Virginia
This is an elusive ancestor that I am desperate to identify. She was born about 1750, possibly in Henrico County or The City of Richmond Virginia. She was probably identified as a Mulatto and her surname may be Lewis (she was also married to Charles Lewis). She married Charles Lewis around 1783, and they resided in The City of Richmond, where he was a businessman at Rockett's Landing. The confusion comes with the number of Charles and Susanna Lewis who were married in that area.

Charles Lewis was born about 1748 in King George County Virginia, the son of (a white man); John Lewis, and a Mulatto woman named Josephine. He had a least one brother, Ambrose Lewis, born about 1750. The brothers served as Seamen out of Fredericksburg Virginia during the Revolutionary War. After their service as Seamen, they served as Foot Soldiers, under General Gates. The fought a losing battle, at the Battle of Camden SC, where Ambrose was taken Prisoner. Charles Lewis is listed as owning property in the City of Richmond in the 1783 tax lists. His daughter, Nancy (my direct ancestor), is listed as a tithable living on his property. There is also a Catherine Robertson living on the property, and Charles Hayes is listed as a renter.
Charles and Susanna were the parents of William, John, and Nancy Lewis. I do not know what Susanna's maiden name was, or when they married. There is a deed which shows Charles and Susanna Lewis owning property at Rocketts' Landing (dated around 1800). I found Charles and Susanna living not only in the City of Richmond, but in Northumberland County. Her name is listed as Hanna on the Personal Property tax list (dated 1788). Charles and Susanna were listed as Susanna, in most of the documents I have for them . -

I am a member of the DAR through my ancestor Charles Lewis. However, he is only listed as Seamen. I have been trying to get his service in the Militia credited to him. The information you posted about Charles Service in Camden is what I have been looking for. I do not have his exact death date, but he and Ambrose petitioned the Senate Committee to receive pensions for their service as Soldiers. The last time they petitioned was in 1808, however, Charles may have been deceased by then. Charles daughter Nancy (my direct ancestor), and various heirs successfully petitioned for his Land Bounty in 1834. They received a certificate, but I believe they sold or transferred it.
I do not know if Charles and Susanna applied for a Land Bounty, but he owned land in The City of Richmond in 1783. He also owned warehouses at Rocketts' Landing around 1788.
I will see what other information I can find. -
