I am looking for my gg grandmother, Esther Robinson b. abt 1830, NC. She was married to Essex Mathews b. 1829, NC. I found them married in Magnolia, Duplin County, NC in the 1870 Census and I found them in Rose Hill, Duplin Couny, NC in the 1880 Census.. l am at a dead end with her family, I am looking for her parents and siblings. She could be possibly from Sampson County, since Sampson came out of Duplin in 1784. Can some one help me. I have the Mathews family information.
Thanks so very much for your help

Here is a marriage record for them as slaves in the Cohabitation Marriages for former slaves who reported their marriages to the County authorities as required by North Carolina law after the end of the Civil War, from "Somebody Knows My Name, Marriage of Freed People in North Carolina, County by County", by Barnetta McGhee White:
Duplin County
ESSICK MATHIS - married EASTER _____(no last name) for 15 years (that would have been about 1851 since the marriage was recorded in 1866)
I've often seen people with the MATTHEWS surname listed as MATHIS in various records; there were also several of their children whose death certificates spell their name with the MATHIS surname.

As far as I know the surname was spelled 3 different ways: Matthis, Mathis and Mathews. I did not have the marriage date/cohabitation date. I see both given names are spelled differently, too. Maybe that's why I could not find anything more on he, except they had 16 childrenr. Thanks for the information as always.
