Hi Jenny,
Based on the known information I believe I have found the Ellen Robbins you are looking for. According to both census & birth records for the children, she was born in Michigan. As you mentioned John was in Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan in the 1870 census. There was also an Ellen Robbins there at the same time. Her age would also be about right.
Note: Eaton Rapids, Eaton, Michigan & Aurelius, Ingham, Michigan are only a few miles a part with the county line running between the two.
Here is Ellen in the 1860 census...note that the Post Office is Eaton Rapids.

*1860 United States Federal Census
Name: Ellen Robbins
Age in 1860: 10
Birth Year: abt 1850
Birthplace: Michigan
Home in 1860: Aurelius, Ingham, Michigan
Gender: Female
Post Office: Eaton Rapids
Household Members:
Name Age
Francis Brooks 56
Malinda Brooks 60
Ellen Robbins 10
*********************************
Here she is in the 1870 census living in the same place with the same family. She appears to have been married, but no spouse is listed and probably widowed.

*1870 United States Federal Census
Name: Ellen Stringham
Birth Year: abt 1850
Age in 1870: 20
Birthplace: Michigan
Home in 1870: Aurelius, Ingham, Michigan
Race: White
Gender: Female
Post Office: Mason
Household Members:
Name Age
Francis Brooks 66
Malinda Brooks 71
Ellen Stringham 20
*********************************
There was a Daniel Stingham who died Oct. 1869 in Aurelius, Ingham, Michigan. My guess this was her husband. His age would be about right and time frame of events seem to match also.
*Name: Daniel Stringham
Death date: 12 Oct 1869
Death place: Aurelius, Ingham, Michigan
Gender: Male
Age at death: 24 years
Estimated birth year: 1845
Marital status: Married

If you can find a marriage record for John & Ellen, she might be listed by her married name of Stringham. I agree, with both being in the same area in 1870, they probably got married in either Ingham or Eaton County.

Hope this helps and perhaps gives you a few more clues to work with.

I am still looking looking for a marriage record for Ellen & John. But I think you may have found my Ellen. Francis & Malinda Brooks are in Eaton Twp.,Charlotte, Eaton Co., MI in the 1880 census. John was in Eaton RapidsTwp, Eaton Co., MI. in 1870.
In 1860 census there is a Fred Robbins age 2 living w/ Knapp family, only a couple of families up from Ellen.
In 1870 Fred is living w/ his father John S. & stepmother Cordelia Robbins. Cordelia's maiden name STINGHAM. John (b. 1820 NY) & Cordelia married in 1862 Ingham Co, MI

I agree the information sure seems to add up that this is the right Ellen.
In the 1860 census you mentioned "there is a Fred Robbins age 2 living w/ Knapp family, only a couple of families up from Ellen." Also on that same page living a couple families up from that Knapp family is Cordelia Stringham with her family.

I haven't been able to find a marriage record either or death record for Ellen.
Strange, it seems I can find some sort of record for everyone else, but not Ellen. I found the death certificates for John & Cordelia Robbins, John Wickleff Morgan, but why not Ellen?

I did find someone who appears to be the great granddaughter of Bert S. Morgan. She has Ellen being born March 1851 and a death of January 19, 1887, but list no sources. But, she does have the correct DOB & DOD for John Morgan. Not sure how helpful this might be?

I have a copy of John Wichliff Morgan's Death record. I found a tree on rootweb for John & Cordelia Robbins and contacted the owner. I sent them an e-mail & they contacted me back. They believe also that John was married before. Fred - Fredrick Robbins is their line. So now to find John's first wife.
Thank you for your help.
Jenny
