I come from a state that raises corn and cotton and cockleburs…frothy eloquence neither convinces nor satisfies me. I'm from Missouri; you've got to show me. -- William Duncan Vandiver, 1899 at a naval banquet in Philadelphia.

I encourage the use of the Discussion Forum instead of the Comment Wall. The tags you add to discussion posts allow you to click on the link and see other posts within Missouri Genealogy with the same tag.

When creating tags in the Discussion Forum
  • If a tag has more than one word, "put it in quotes". This will create one tag.
  • Put surnames in ALL CAPS. This will differentiate surnames when they are the same as other potential tags. (e.g. JACKSON)
  • If you're using the name of a county as a tag, add the word 'county'. (e.g. "Jackson County").
  • As the Admin, I can add tags, but I can't edit tags the creator of the thread chose.

Lydia, The Mid-Continent Public Library (in Jackson County) appears to have the IRS Tax Assessments from 1862-1865. (Ancestry.com has a database from 1862-1918, but it's not complete.) The Kansas City Public Library has city directories since 1859. I'm not sure what area they cover, but both Kansas City and Independence are in Jackson County.

My gggrandfather was only on the 1860 census in Independence, Missouri. I'd like to know how long he was there before and after 1860. Do yearly tax rolls from that time period exist for Missouri? And if they do, who would be likely to have the tax rolls or copies of them?

My husband's ancestor, James Adkins, lived in various areas of Missouri and is buried in the Platte City Cemetery. He was involved in the Bloody Kansas battles. He died while in office as a MIssouri State Senator. We keep hoping to find a picture of him from his days in State government, but apparently they all burned up with the old Capitol building.

I checked out the URL on Cherpkees and saw so many references of HICKS family, I will need alot of time to check it out. I need to find:
Isaac HICKS b.1729 MD d. 1812 Sullivan Co, TN
Stephen HICKS b. 1760 VA d. 1840 Sullivan Co, TN
Stephen I HICKS b. 1795 Greene Co, TN d.1870 Schuyler Co, MO
Hannah HICKS b. 1831 Greene Co, TN d. Downing, Schuyler Co, MO

With these dates in mind, I believe the HICKS family joined the Trail of Tears between 1838 and 1839.

If anyone can help me on this I would appreciate it. Thank you so much.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I find myself drifting from one dead end to another. It is hard to keep q focus. I hope you enjoy your visit to Hick's tree. I find it awesome. Would like to hear if you find anything of use.

Thank you Jeannie. I have struggled to get the correct web sites available, then end up trailing off to something else that looks interesting and not focusing on what is at task. I will try the URL and let you know what I find. Beth

About HICKS: There is a huge Cherokee family tree site URL that I have pasted below in my post. It has many 1000s of names. The URL brings up the home page. Go to bottom of page and click on index. It is one of my very favorite sites.
