Permalink Reply by Gary Inglish on January 16, 2012 at 8:19pm Hi,
I am descendant of John INGLISH, my earliest confirmed ancestor. John INGLISH was born Oct 1777, was a native of “New River” Virginia. Died Aug 29, 1844 in “Moniteau County”, Missouri. (these dates are from his gravestone picture, but his birth may have been as early as 1768) As an adult, he lived a while in Kentucky and Tennessee. He served in War of 1812 as Captain in General Doherty's Brigade, under Col. Bunch. He moved from Jacksboro, “Campbell County” Tenn. to Missouri about 1816/17, where he helped establish one of the first settlements in central Missouri in “Cole County” and what is now “Moniteau County”. His Wife was Mary BRUTON b. 1776, d. 1850.
We are looking for further connections with John's ancestors, particularly his parents and siblings.
The story is told that John Inglish is a descendant of Thomas ENGLISH. Thomas and his four sons fought in the Revolutionary War. One of these sons became so enraged at England that he said "To Hell with England, from now on I will spell my name with an I." And that is supposedly the beginning of the spelling INGLISH. We would love to be able to validate this story.
