My 3x great grandfather was George Metcalfe, born 1824 in Grewelthorpe, civil parish Kirkby Malzeard, North Yorkshire.  He was apprenticed as a blacksmith to William Gaines.  In 1842 the Gaines family, George Metcalfe, and William Gaines in-laws, Jonathan and Mary Imeson, and most of their children, landed in New York City.   By 1845 George was in Welland and married to Mary Imeson.  They settled in Romney Township, Kent County, Ontario. George died in Romney in 1904.

My husband's great great grandmother was Elizabeth Metcalf (1818 - 1873). She immigrated from Yorkshire, England to Ontario, Canada with her family in 1834. Her father was Robert, a Wesleyan Methodist preacher. In England the family lived in or near Masham Parish, West Yorkshire. I'm looking to to trace the family roots before Robert.

One of my immigrant ancestors is Michael Metcalfe, who settled in Dedham, Norfolk, MA. I lose the name quite quickly, when his daughter Elizabeth marries Thomas Bancroft in the mid 1600s.

Hello Di! I'm so glad you started this group.

My paternal grandmother was a Metcalfe, but I don't have much information on that branch of the family so far.

I think that my great-grandfather George Thornton Metcalfe (probably b.1859, England; d.1918, New York,) and his brother Charles Henry Metcalfe (probably b.1857, England; d.1938, New York) came to Union County, New Jersey from England sometime between 1865 and the 1880 census.

George married Mary McEvoy sometime between 1880 and 1885. They had three children in Bergen County, New Jersey: in 1885, 1887, and my grandmother, Isabelle Metcalfe, was born in February of 1890.

I think that George and Charles’s parents lived in or around London. Their mother’s name was Charlotte Thornton. Their father was likely a Charles W. Metcalfe, but some undocumented research done by an uncle of mine had him as Henry Metcalfe.

I’m happy to share what little I have so far with anyone who’s interested.
