McGown, McGowen or McGowan

Does anyone have any information for an Elizabeth McGown born in Glascow, Scotland in the 1800's and married to a John McGown with children, Jane, Elizabeth and Agnes? Elizabeth and the children migrated to the United States around 1875 to Utah but John did not. Guessing John must have died but have no information on him. Would love to find a connection if anyone has anything.

That can be somewhat common for families to marry cousins or some strange thing like that because the area wasn't as populated then as it is now and they could not travel and communicate like we do now. Keep digging. Eventually you will find the connection and it may be something as simple as the name McGowen meaning (the son of the Smith).

I have a Jane McGeren who may be a McGowen marrying a speculative brother or cousin of my great grandma Hannah Martin in 1856 in New Haven, CT. I have a Margaret McGann (that I think is a McGowan) who was a witness to my great great grandparent's wedding in New Haven, CT in 1857. A year later when their first son is born, one of the godparents is a Robert McGann (again, I believe McGowen) in Davenport, IA. Then there's a Clara McGowan born 1904 living in 1925 with the grandchildren of my great great grandparents in Nebraska. I have no idea of how these folks are related to us, but am sure they are. I did do a tree based on tracking a Mooney family who also showed up as godparents on baptismal records circa 1860's in IA. I have an ancestry tree saved on the connection between the Mooneys and the McGowens through their intermarriage, but I've yet to figure out how they're related to either the Martins or the Smiths in my own tree. They appear to have started in CT, previously coming from Ireland, and go to Davenport, IA, but then move together as branches move further west. Any ideas?

So far I don't have her on my tree. The McGown's I know of at that time line on my tree are in Indiana. Thanks for posting your McGown.

Hi Glenda,

I have an Agnes Mathie McGown in my family tree. She married James Scott in Tasmania in 1845.
