The tombstone photos are my great grandfather, AUSTIN HOUSE, his brother LORENZO, JAMES HOUSE, twin brother of MILTON HOUSE who married my great grandmother, MARY ANN FORSHEE, after my great grandfather;, JAMES RICHARD WINFIELD FORSHEE died. The photo of me at the grave of DOLLIE HOUSE, daughter of MARY ANN AND MILTON, who died in infancy.

There were 2 men named Adam House who lived in MO. I believe this story is about Adam 2
While at the LDS library in Dec I found a little booklet on Adam House.
This is the short version. Other info was on the everyday pioneer life.
The Legend Of House Springs by Della Lang has a copyright of 1992 but no ISBN number which you need for a library to locate a book. I think it was probably self published.
It lists the father as Adam House who had been a Rev War soldier from VA. In 1789 they headed west to MO for a land grant. They arrived via wagon train in New Madrid and were forced to pledge allegiance to the King of Spain before receiving a land grant. Loyalty to the King also meant swearing allegiance to the Catholic Church which Spainish law required, but Adam only pretended to be Catholic as did many other prostestant settlers.
((This is a red flag for me. The House family from Madison/Culpeper were such devote German Lutherans, that I can not imagine him pretending to be of another faith.))
Adam left New Madrid and traveled to St. Ferdinand, now called Florissant where he lived for 6 years. Adam did not like living in a community. He heard about some land that was abandoned in a valledy on the branch of the Meramec River (now called Big River).
Adam and wife Anna were parents of 7 children: Drucilla (married to Hardy Ware), Margaret and Mary ( stayed with Drucilla when Adam and Anna moved), 14 yr old John, 10 yr old Jacob, 15 yr old Betsy and 8 yr old Peggy.
They moved to what is now Jefferson Co. expecting to find a cabin on the abanoned property, but they found only ashes. They built a new cabin and prepared for winter. I took 3 months to built their cabin. The winter of 1798-99 was cold and wet and it was hard to keep the cabin warm.
Anna developed a terrible cough and used boneset and peppermint for her medicine. She died and was buried under her favorite cedar tree. Adam took the childern to visit their sisters in St. Ferdinand. While there Margaret became engaged to Isaac Hilderbrand and planned to marry in a year.
Adam and childern returned to Big River and returned to their daily lives. That winter while
hunting yound John saw smoke in the sky and knew it meant Osage Indians. He quickly returned home to warn his father of the danger. They armed themselves and waited several hours. Finally they noticed 2 indians approach. Adam thought they wanted to talk. Adam did not speak their lanuage but quickly understood they wanted horses. Adam raised his gun and ordered the Osage off his land, returned to the house and informed his family they will be back.
They indians returned and stole his only horses and Adam was angry. He told Besty to prepare him a pack he would be gone a few days. He was going to borrow a horse from settlers on the Meramec. He traveled to the government house on the Mississippi River to tell the story to the Lt. Governor. The Lt. Governor did not want trouble with the indians and told Adam he would get the horses and return them to him. Adam wanted the indians arrested. The Lt. Governor warned Adam this could cause an indian uprising. The indians were arrested and Adam returned to his home and family.
For several weeks Adam kept the childern close and looked over his shoulder. The family stayed close to home. John was fetching water and heard the indians coming. He ran to warn his father that there were many coming this time. Adam sent John on foot to the Meamec Settlement for help. He sent the girls noth toward St. Ferdinand for help. Adam and Jacob remained behind to hold off the Indians.
John made good time, but he tripped and dropped his rifle which fired and hit him in the arm. It was a flesh wound and he tended to it and returned to run on. He reached the Tyler place and neighbors were sent to help Adam.
When Mr. Tyler returned he told John that they were too late, that both Adam and Jacob had been killed. John stayed with the Tylers for a few days.
March 25, 1800, Ensign Pascal Cerre and his men stopped at the Tyler home to explain they had been sent to investigate the House murders. They questioned John and asked him to accompany them to the House homestead. When John arrived he found a family friend Robert Owens who had come to let John know his sisters were safe.
Robert Owens was appointed the legal guardian of the House childern.
The House sisters married Davis and Isaac Hildebrand and came back to live in the House Springs area. John never returned.
The land were this story took place is now occupied by 3 fast food restaurants. A portion of the spring is still visible. -

Be it known that before me a justice of the peace within and for the County of Texas and state aforesaid personlly appeared John House aged fifty six years ______ and then sworn in due form of Law, states that he is the son of Adam House who was a revolutionary soldier in the state of Virginia and that he died on the 30th day of September 1832 and that his mother named Catherine died on the 10th day of April in the year 1792 and that they were residents of Culpepper County Virginia and that they ____ these fifteen years and that their heirs now resides in the state of Missouri and furthermore by these presants constitutes and appoints and fully empowers and authorizes irrevocable and with powers of substitutions, F. S. Hassin, of Washington City District of Columbia, as our true and lawful attorney for us and in our names ______ examine_____ and to prosecute and ______ to receive from the U S Government and state officeis all rights in all and in ____ manner of claim for ____________of pension of Law that may be due us as heirs of Adam House who died leaving the same _________ in right of Law, he was entitled. In witness whereof John House for himself and in behalf of the heirs of the said Adam House and by their ____ (Matthiasis House, Adam House, Jacob House, Joseph House, Mary Hall and her husband, formerly Mary House, Catherine Hopson and her husband formerly Catherine House have on the first day of November _ 1852 hereunto signed my name and affix my seal

There are a bunch of House graves in a little cem. I have been looking for ,Find a grave, Smiths cem. Boydsville Clay Co. Ar.

I just found a small grave yard at Boydsville Ar. You can find it on Find A Grave name is Smith Chaple Cem. There is a bunch of House graves there I beleave Simon House is buried there

You will find a few House members from Henry Co. Ten. Buried in a cemetery called Smiths chapel cemetary in Clay Co. Ar.
