Hi,

My grandmother Eti Lapidus was born in Boston in 1894. Her parents were Adolf Lapidus born c 1863 and who was Russian and Sarah (unknown surname) born c1869 who was German. I have this info from my grandmother's birth certificate. At the time of her birth they lived in Middlesex Street, Suffolk, Boston, Mass. 

Adolf and Sarah both emigrated from Galacia to the USA. They arrived in New York in 1888 and settled in Boston, Mass. Eti had a brother Luis and a sister who was Elizabeth but seems to have been called Fanny.

I have found the passenger ship records from when Adolf and Sarah arrived in the USA and also of when Sarah and the children came to the UK. Its a mystery as to what happened to Adolf. When they came to the UK there is even more mystery as my grandmother and her brother were put into an orphanage and Sarah and the middle child seem to have disappeared off the face of the earth. There are no death records for either of them.

There are a lot of people with the name Lapidus in Boston...surely one or more of them is related to Adolf? But how do I find out?  I'm completely at a loss as to where to look for info to help me.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Looking for ships records for Alois WIpfler. According to what I found so far he came to US 1868 Boston.

Any help with passenger list would be appreciated.

Dave -- Glad the leads are helpful. When you are checking the annexed towns records you might want to also check the church records for those towns. Often (and especially here in Mass.) a family's home may change from one town to another without them actually moving due to boundary changes, and even if they did move a short distance, they might still maintain their church affiliation with the previous town. In the town I live in here in Mass. there is one road where the town boundary runs right down the middle of the road -- one side is in one town, the other side in another town. Moving across the street is not reason enough to change which church you might go to.

Samantha -- You don't mention which town or date that the death occurred in, but since you are posting this in the Massachusetts Ancestry group, then I will assume it is in Massachusetts. Given that, you might check the website for the specific town for information about which cemeteries exist in that town. In many cases the local Public Works department maintains the records for the cemeteries in town, In many cases the website will contain information about the date(s) the cemetery was established which might help you to narrow the possibilities.

September, thanks for the great list of clues.  Some (the probate records & pension file) I have followed already, but there are several others to keep me busy for a while.  I especially appreciate you pointing out the changes in the town boundaries--I will need to look in the annexed town's records for records also.

Also, another good way is to join a RootsWeb message board or mailing list for the county where the cemetery is located.  Go to the following site and click on the appropriate links for boards or mailing lists:

A final idea is the USGenWeb project at:

http://www.usgenweb.org/

That should get you started! :-)
