My anncestors were Thomas and Susannah Salisbury Seaman their son Gilbert was born November 29,1706 in Swansea, mass He married Mary Bowen on July 11,108. She was the daughter of Thomas Bowen and Thankful Mason. Thomas Bowen and Thankful married in Swansea Mass on June 17,1689. Thankful was the daughter of Sampson Mason and Marybutterworth she was born in Rehoboth Mass on Oct. 27,1672. Thomas Bowen was from an ancient Welsh family. Thomas was born August 3,1664, died 1743. He was son of Obadiah Bowen and Mary Clifton. We cantrace his lineage, through Obadiah Bowen, back 19 generations to Maynerick, Lord of Brethnock and Ellen, daughter of Einon ap Selif.

Sampson Mason was a shoemaker. The earliest known record of him in New England is dated 1649. According to a history of the Baptists in America,"Sampson Mason was a soldier in Cromwell's Army and came to America upon the turn of the times in England........ " On March 9,1650/51 he purchased a house and lot in Dorchester Mass. The lot contained 6 acres. On February 19,1655/56 he sold his house and home in Dorchester and other property. He moved to Rehoboth sometime before Dec.9,1657. He was one of the original proprietors when the ton of Swansea was incorporated on March5,1668. In 1672, he was alloted twelve acres of land in Swansea. He died in 1676. He apparently left a large estate for his time. During King Philip's War (which broke out shortly after his death) his widow contribuuted 13 pounds,5 shillings and 10 pence, the ninth largest in the list of contributions from Rehoboth. Mary Butterworth Mason died Aug. 29,1714.

I descend from Joseph Mason born about 1739 of Lancaster VA. I have a brick wall at this point. I am not sure where he was born and don't know who his parents were. I have been DNA tested and the results are that I am a NULL439 or S26+. The only Mason on the Mason World Wide Project that has been deep clade tested and found to be a NULL439/S26+ and also the only Mason on the NULL439/S26+ project or also called L1.

The significance of the DNA testing is that my Mason family most probably was descended from Roman Auxiliary Troops call the Batavians. These troops manned the structure called Hadrian's Wall and my DNA indicates that my people were from southern Scotland and Northern England area cluster 2.This cluster dates back 1900 years, 350 years before the Saxon migrations. These Batavian Troops originally inhabited an area of the Rhine river in the Netherlands and were a sub tribe of the Saxon.

Now all I have to do is link up my Joseph Mason of 1739 VA to the people of 100 AD which is a tall order.

In case anyone is interested I have been researching my family for thirty years and have pretty much discovered who most of Joseph Mason's descendants were. I can share my info with you in a pdf or you can see it on the Rootsweb.

I have 2 lines of Mason. One originates from Captain Hugh Mason and the other is Henry Mason b. 1529 in England to Agnes Mason to Thomas Harris of Suffolk County, Massachusetts

My maiden name is Mason, and I've traced my father's line back to John Mason, b 7 Jan 1798, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. He married 7 Mar 1820 to Abigail Amanda Robey in Canterbury, Merrimack, New Hampshire. In 1835, they were in Illinois and settled in Bureau County. John Mason's parents were: Robert Mason, b 11 May 1727 (where?) and died 6 Aug 1804, buried at Veasey's Graveyard, Deerfield, Rockingham, New Hampshire. Robert Mason's wife was Anna Ervin (sp?), b abt 1807. She is buried at the same place. their children were: Moses Mason, b abt 1793; Anna Erwen Mason, b 11 May 1727, d 6 Aug 1804, buried at Veasey's Graveyard; Jane Webster Mason, b 20 Jan 1796, d abt 1799, buried at Veasey's Graveyard. The Mason's DNA haplogroup is R1b1c and seems to match the Philbrick family of NH rather closely.
