Could you please look at this photo and give a guess to when it may have been taken. I was thinking it could be in the late 1870's or 1880's. I DO NOT have the orginial it was shared by a distant cousin. Thay said it was a cabinet card.

Just wanted to pass along two links that may be of help to the group members:

1. The GenPhoto Group at Yahoo. Description: Everything you want to know about genealogy and family photographs. Help with identifying and preserving old photographs. As well as using the digital photography and scanning to share and preserve family photographs. Don't forget to visit the Files section for wallpaper you can download. Look in Files then in Wallpaper folder.

2. City Gallery has two free downloads: a) Carte De Visite Matrix - A chart helping to estimate when a carte de visite was made by card characteristics. (PDF file) and b) Blank Photo Sheet - A blank form to record information about your family photographs. Although a database can store the same information, a hand written hard copy can be beneficial. (PDF file)

I have loads of pictures. Some, I know who they are. Some, I have an idea but little or no evidence. Others, I haven't a clue. This should be fun!

I use Irfanview too. You can resize to *any* width you want. You are apparently resizing using the Standard Dimensions in Irfanview but you can choose your own - here's how

Open your image. Click on IMAGE>RESIZE/RESAMPLE

You will see a popup window (see my graphic above)

Tick the radio button for SET NEW SIZE

Choose your UNITS as PIXELS

Make sure you have ticked the button for PRESERVE ASPECT RATIO

Now in the WIDTH field (back up at SET NEW SIZE) type in 500. The Height will set automatically.

See where the little pop up window I have shown you here shows the original size versus the current size? I resized a photo that was over 2,000 pixels wide to 500.

JB - Don't click on the FORUM tab which is at the very top of the page - that is the forum for all of GenealogyWise!

Just click on START DISCUSSION just above the Comment Wall and the RSS section in this group.

Hi JB

Uploading pics to the Discussion Forum just means you should start a new discussion topic in the Forum (not here on the comment wall, which is for comments or ideas)

Upload your photo once you start your new Discussion Topic, then tell us about the photo - maybe you have a query about it or you just want to tell us about it.

Just joined the group. I read the instructions for uploading photos. When I read the part about not uploading photos to the wall, but to the discussion forum, I clicked the 'Forum' tab. And here I am, wondering what 'Upload photos to the discussion forum' means.

Barb,
Click the camera icon & then click the add image/file link - you have to already have your photo on your computer (Scanned or downloaded ((with your camera memory card)) to My Documents or My Pictures) to add it.
