Hi

I am interested in the Devonshire family of silversmiths/goldsmiths & spoonmakers during the 18th & early 19th c. They lived around Stepney, Clerkenwell, Shoreditch and were members of the goldsmith's company. Also John Meadows a seal engraver of Falcon Square. Not sure if he was a member of the Goldsmith's Company but if anyone has access to their records I would be interested to know if he was. He was father in law to John Devonshire, seal engraver & later jet jewellery maker, who was my late first wife's ancestor.

Thank you. I used to subscribe to Origins but just do Ancestry and FindMyPast at the moment. I will check out the Curriers. Fortunately I have cousins (about fifth) living in London who are doing the BEARD line. I must write and ask if they have checked out the Curriers.

Cliff Webb has transcribed a large number of the membership records ie. admissions records, BUT he has not covered all such records and sometimes before the admission papers were recorded one needs to rely on the minutes. Webb has made these available in small booklets and the materials he transcribed are also indexed on the Origins fee-based website. You can use the catalogue on-line for the Guildhall and see if there are any published materials that have transcriptions other than Webb's works. Guildhall indicates that if a person is looking for tanners, then check out the Worshipful Company of Curriers. Their website is http://www.curriers.co.uk/ They may refer you back to Guildhall, but this should assist you in your effort.

No I haven't used the Livery company records yet. I only discovered Henry Beard was a tanner recently and do not know if I will discover records on him yet.

Elizabeth Kipp, GOONS # 4600

I have several lines in London that might appear in these organizations. Siderfin, and Blake were at the Inns of Courts (have those records). Buller was involved with Slop shops and he is my most difficult line (back to my 3x great grandfather Christopher Buller who had a shop on Tooley Street, Bermondsey). My 4x great grandfather Henry Beard was a tanner on Grange Road in Bermondsey. One of these days we are going to spend some time at Kew and the Guild Hall. Live in Canada.
