As part of my One Name Study I have found several members of Livery Companies - mostly from the same family. I have been to the Guildhall Library and searched the records of the Cutlers Company.

These are all from Penkridge in Staffordshire:
Simon Duncalfe, Cutler, sworn & admitted 18 May 1695
Edward Duncalfe, Cutler, sworn & admitted 4 Oct 1699 (brother of Simon)
Isaac Duncalfe, Cutler, sworn & admitted 20 April 1710 (ditto)

A Joseph Duncalf from Bushbury in Staffordshire was apprenticed to the Brewers Company 1685 [Origins Database] He lived mainly in Clerkenwell but had two children baptised at St Michael le Querne

From this same family but another branch I have a Waterman & Lighterman, but can't lay my hands on the details at present!

I don't know what TBD means. To Be Determined ?

This brings up an important issue. I would like to keep distinctions between membership known and being sought or of interest. How do you feelo about the dessriptions basically known membership and membership TBD? Is TBD a common term acros cultures?

Could you please add to the list above the Devonshire family - Goldsmiths as well as the interests from my last message.

I am also interested in Alexander Portrey (1602 - 1642) of Lincoln's Inn & Humphrey Hurlestone (d.1660) of Inner Temple. Alexander's sister was my ancestor & Humphrey married Alexander's widow. There was a major court action between the heirs of Alexander which dragged on and on. Alexander's son in law was Owen Feltham of Gray's Inn, so I have an interest in him too.

Thanks. I have the details of the Devonshire family admissions and some other detail from the Goldsmiths records, but I have not yet tried to get anything on John Meadows, who may or may not have been a member, being a seal engraver. I think I did try Origins for him without success, but I will check again and will check the sources you suggest.

By the way I recognise your name. Have we corresponded before ?

Hi Bob! The Goldsmith's have a website and may be able to advise you if they search in their records on behalf of the public or not. ome records are at the Guildhall, but not the ones that are the most criticial for establishing relationships -- admissions papers in particular. Be sure to check the Guildhall on-line catalogue to see of the records have been published. If so, aside from the admissions papers, be sure to check the minutes since they often go back further in time. Many of these are not indexed. Cliff Webb has indexed many of the admissions papers and are supposed to be available at ORIGINS. My only concern is that you need to be sure to not assume this is all that is available to find your ancestor. Denise
