Changing location of multimedia files

I have just purchased a 500GB external hard drive to store all my Legacy multimedia files.  I've changed the location in the "Options" so it now knows where they are.  BUT, when I perform a backup, it says all the multimedia files are missing!  How do I change where each picture is located without having to do each (1,000's of them!) one at a time??
