If your Lawson line has been in the US since 1747, when the Ship Gildart arrived with prisoners who were indentured slaves, punishment for the Jacobite uprising, then you may want to review the data for the Lawson Family Heritage Program. Their database is hosted on Rootsweb.com

The LFHP is specifically for the descendants of William "The Scottish Rebel" Lawson & his wife, Rebecca. (Her surname is not Banks as was reported at one time.)

"William was taken prisoner by the English following the Scottish uprisings of 1746. He was given a conditional pardon by King George II of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and banished to the colonies. He arrived on the ship Gildart in July, 1747 near Port Wicomico, St. Mary's County, Maryland. The land location is now known as Bushwood. We believe that the ship anchored offshore in this general area."

Comment by Carla Georgie on July 24, 2009 at 6:09pm: My G.G.G Grandfather was James Madison Lawson born 11/13/1816 in Tennessee, Died 2/24/1880 in Iberia, Missouri. He is father of 12 children.

Comment by Danny Wahlquist on July 11, 2009 at 7:22am: My great great grandfather, Samuel Lawson was born 1827 in Norway, and died about 1875 in Louisiana.
He married Rebecca Eliza Kelly about 1863 in Louisiana.
She was born about 1834 in Alabama, and died 08 Dec 1894.

In the 1870 census, Samuel Lawson (43) was listed as a sawyer and Rebecca (23) Lawson lived in Tangipahoa,Louisiana
with children Eliza(16), Charlie(13), Henry(9), Norris(6), Archie(4), John(3), Julius(3 mo).

In the 1880 census, Rebecca Nelson(43) is head of house in Amite City,Tangipahoa,Louisiana with daughter Eliza(24)
and her husband Joseph Clarke(23), Henry Scott(21), Andrew Lawson(12) and John Lawson(11).

Children of Samuel Lawson and Rebecca Eliza Kelly are:
i. Norris Lawson, born about 01 Apr 1864, , , LA.
ii. Andrew Lawson, born about 1866, , , LA; d. 19 Jan 1949, New Orleans, Orleans, LA.
iii. John Joseph Lawson, born 11 May 1867, Amite City, Tangipahoa, Louisiana; d. 09 Dec 1955, Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee.
iv. Julius Lawson, born Feb 1870.

They are worldwide I do believe.

Comment by Kirsty F Wilkinson on July 9, 2009 at 6:23am: My ancestor Martin Lawson was a Mariner. The only thing I really know about him is that he married Hannah Chapman on 15 April 1809 in Gorleston, Suffolk, UK and had at least three children.
