Welcome Lawson Descendants

If you are researching any form of the LAWSON surname, welcome.

If your Lawson line has been in the US since 1747, when the Ship Gildart arrived with prisoners who were indentured slaves, punishment for the Jacobite uprising, then you may want to review the data for the Lawson Family Heritage Program. Their database is hosted on Rootsweb.com

The LFHP is specifically for the descendants of William "The Scottish Rebel" Lawson & his wife, Rebecca. (Her surname is not Banks as was reported at one time.)

"William was taken prisoner by the English following the Scottish uprisings of 1746. He was given a conditional pardon by King George II of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and banished to the colonies. He arrived on the ship Gildart in July, 1747 near Port Wicomico, St. Mary's County, Maryland. The land location is now known as Bushwood. We believe that the ship anchored offshore in this general area."

NOTE: The Lawson Family Heritage Program just created a Message Board. Registration is no longer required to post, but you do have to be registered to post attachments such as documents or photos.

Thanks for the welcome. My Lawson line is on my maternal side. My grandmother was Isabel Lawson - I have tracked them to William Lawson (abt 1817) Scotland married to Helen (abt 1817) Scotland. They had John (1846), David W. (1855) and Thomas (1858). David is my ancestor. William evidently made it to England before 1855 as that is where David was born. David married Elizabeth Harkness and came to USA in 1896. Their children were all born in England except for my grandmother, Isabel who was born in New York in 1887. This does not match with the immigration date for the family. I have not proven the William and Helen connection, but have lots on David.

Patti

Welcome!!

If a person will start a DISCUSSION (creates a thread), then every response to that question, in the thread, will help to keep the Q & A's separate.

If there is something you want to respond to that isn't in a Discussion, just make your discussion title whatever the comment was "An answer to --- 's question" and maybe then we can pull the new comments up to the forum/thread..

For openers, my husband's Lawson family is one of those descended from Wm Lawson whom we refer to as "The Scottsh Rebel". I maintain the database on rootsweb that Sherry H. has referred to and also answers queries sent to the The Lawson Family Heritage Program.

For future reference-is there a way to reply directly to a previous message in thread format instead of starting a new message? Thanks for the invite Sherry.

I received this notice today on my Facebook page from Patti Lawson. She is the database keeper for the Lawson Family Heritage Program, links in the Welcome section above.

This is intended for any of our family who are descendants of Grandpa James Lawson and his wife Frances. In case any of you have not received the email notification our site on myfamily.com is back online. Some of you did not have email when the site first started a few years ago or we may have an outdated email for you. If you have not gotten an email invite to the site please let me know and we will get you added.

My great-great grandfather was Gilber Lawson, born 1830 in Norway. He married Anne Randine Hansdtr in Norway and had a daughter, Teya. He emmigrated about 1853 and lived in Moline or Rock Island Illinois for most of his life. He married second, Helena Erickson Anderon, a widow with three children (Daniel Anderson born 1842 in Norway, Hannah Anderson Abraham, born 1845 in Norway and Emma Anderson Jones, born 1848 in Norway). Gilbert and Helena had two children, Matilda Lawson Downes Whitson, Doberson, LeMond, born 1855 in Illinois and Lizzie Lawson Chase, born 1860 in Illinois. Last info I have on Gilbert is a land transaction in June 1892. The 1892-93 city directory for Rock Island lists his wife as his widow. My brick wall is determining when and where Gilbert died and where he is buried. He is not buried with Helena (she died in 1895) nor is any mention made in her obituary. Have not been able to locate him in any of the cemeteries in Rock Island county. Any help would be appreciated.
