I am a descendant of John Kenney of Rockbridge County through a daughter Sarah who married James Petticrew in Botetourt County on Feb 12, 1817.  I believe this John Kenney died in 1813 with a will in Rockbridge County with children William, James, David, Joseph, Sampson, "Sally", Betsy, Susanna and wife Elizabeth.  I suspect that John Kenney is the son of James Barnett Kenney and would like to prove / disprove it.  I have looked for a DNA overlap with a friend who is a descendant of James Barnett Kenney, but we did not have an overlap.  Any suggestions?  Looking at the given names, it seems more like a match to the James Barrett Kenney family than the Matthew Kenney family.

Hi Priscilla,
There were 2 sets of Kenney's in the Rockingham Co. area in the time frame that you are talking about one of them I know for sure was kin to me and the other I feel sure was also kin but have not been able to prove that. There were Williams in both of those lines. They were both from Augusta Co. before Rockingham Co. The father of my direct line was James Barnett Kenney and the father of the other line was Robert. I have all my genealogy packed away as I am getting ready to move but if you would send me your e-mail I will be glad to get back with you on both lines when I do get moved. My 3rd great grandfather was William Kenney of Harrisonburg, VA. The 1880 cenus shows his mother, Elizabeth aged 80 in the household. I have not been able to definately find his existance prior to that date. I do have extensive facts on his descendants and of his wife, Maria Catherine Mcdorman Kenney. I do not know of any of his immediate family that may have relocated to KY, but wonder if he could have had brothers that did.
