Pictured above is the entrance to Glasnevin cemetery in Dublin which probably has the largest number of Kennedy graves in the British/Irish Isles. I have photographed about 60 of them but its tricky to get to all the stones as in Ireland gravestones tend to be closely packed together. The biggest in Scotland is Ayr cemetery with about 70 photographed. If anyone is looking for a Kennedy burial in either of these places drop me a private message and I can do a lookup; some of the burials are 20th century so its not appropriate to post the full details. I have similar Kennedy gravestone photographs taken in Limerick, Nenagh, Donegal, Derry/Londonderry and Belfast as well as all over Scotland.

Thank you Iain, I think I had better acquaint myself with a map of Ireland before I start. Appreciate your help, I have been reading up on the DNA testing for Kennedy's, I know of other people who have done it at it seems to be very helpful.

Chris, its more of a religious thing, some names are exclusive either to the Catholics or Protestants although its never 100%. Typically Protestant first names are William, Samuel, David, Joseph (to a lesser extent). Strongly Catholic names include Michael and Patrick. Michael Kennedys tend to be Catholics from Munster. David Kennedys strongly tend to be Presbyterians from coastal Ulster, mostly Antrim and Down. You can see these patterns in the census returns and also the BMD indexes.

I don't think he is married when he signed up - too young. It looks like several of his older brothers may also have signed up but this needs confirming. There is a young couple William and Carie together in the 1920 census. If you drop me a private message with an external email I will send you what I have but its just a suggestion that needs confirming.

lain if you any info on him and he is the one who married a Caroline Crane that would be him no matter when he was born I just search and that is what I found that someone else entered.

Thank you Iain, time is something I don't have a lot of but I squeeze in what I can. Thank you for the pointers, you mentioned the name being more like from Antrim or Down, does that mean that certain names relate to certain areas? Also does the naming go like the Scottish where the eldest son is likely to be named after the father? As mine seems to run, John, David, John, David, based on that could I assume if David was the eldest son his father would have been John Kennedy? I just thought it may help me in my searches.
Thanks again
Chris

Iain not 100% sure on birth date I have seen several sources from 1898 to 1900 I have Dec 12 but that could be wrong as well Does it say who he was married too

Allen, what is the source of the information about his birthdate and place, presumably not from a birth certificate? There are several Kennedys who signed the WW1 draft at Council Bluffs and they include a William Grant Kennedy born 13 Dec 1899.

William (Bill) Grant Kennedy was born in Council Bluffs Iowa in 1898 and Died in Los Angeles Co. CA. 1965 That is all the info I have. And he was Married to Caroline M. Crane Born in 1901 in Council Bluffs Iowa and Died in Los Angeles Co. Ca. 1960 Anybody with any info William Grant Kennedy like his parents and so on.

They aren't in the Glasgow PO directories as I predicted, I didn't get around to the other lookup (yet).
There isn't a methodology to solving the Irish connection problem and the odds are against it that early, it depends how much effort and time you are prepared to put in. If it was me I would start with the Kirk session records, landowners records (you can get the list of heritors from the Statistical account of the parish), also examine the other Irish immigrants in the parish and build up a picture of where they were coming from. Looks like a mixture of places to me. The minister's wife was Irish and you can get her details from the Scottish Fasti entry for her husband, looks like she was from Dublin. In all probability David Kennedy as a name is most likely from Antrim or Down but I wouldn't rule out other counties as there were Presbyterian and CoI Kennedys sprinkled all over the country.

Hello Iain, I have spoken to you before about my "elusive" Kennedy ancestors from Gargunnock and Barony, it appears my ggg grandfather David Kennedy was born in Ireland. I have searched all the sites I can think of and have been told it helps if you have an area in Ireland that you know your ancestor was from, could you tell me how I can find out some information to help me get kick started. You were also looking into some details for me after you queried my line just wondering if you remember me and if you found anything out?
