What collection are you looking at when at the historical building? I have been less than impressed. When I compare what is at the MN historical building, it is night and day both in terms of content but facilities (hand crank versus motorized microfilm readers, comes to mind). Perhaps I am missing something. Could you please more specific about the collections that you found wonderful? I would like to check them out. Thanks.

Anyone searching for ancestors in Iowa must see the collections at the Historical building in Des Moines. It is wonderful.

I am searching for my great grandfather, Berend Borgers. Berend was born on 14 January 1857 in Ede, Gelderland, Netherlands. He was united in marriage with Hermina van Beek on 12 November 1881 in Ede. He and his family arrived at Ellis Island 21 October 1892. Their final destination was Alton, Sioux County, Iowa. I know he passed away shortly after arriving in the States but do not know when nor where. Received a hint from a relative that he may have passed away en-route to Alton. Any suggestions where to look/search if he passed away on the way to Alton?

I had family in Iowa in the mid to late 1800's and would like any help I can get with finding out more about them. My two great great uncles appear to have been oin Remson Township... they were Robert and Thomas McCaustland. Thomas was married and living with his son in law. My Grandfather, James McCaustland, lived in Harrison County on Keg Creek where he built a home and farmed. He is buried, however, in Shelby along with a daughter that died young, Cora by name and his mother in law, Catherine Winn. The Old Home Place was sold after 1927 when his wife died in CA.

from August 1, 2010 to August 4 there will be a conference in Cedar Falls sponsored by the Ostfriesen Genealogical Society of America. If you want more information check out the website. http://www.ogsa.us/ Ostfriesland is an area of Germany adjacent to the Dutch border. They settled first in the Hardin/Grundy/Butler county area of Iowa. Check it out!

There's going to be a day-long conference on Irish Research on August 7th in Des Moines. We're bringing in two speakers from the Irish Genealogical Society Int'l in Minneapolis to present. We'd love to see you there. Go to Iowagenealogy.org for information and registration,

My father's family( Boehm) still reside in Bufflo Center, Iowa. I'm looking for any immigration info on his Grandfather, Frederich Johann Boehm who arrived in 1875(?) from Jettsburg(?) Germany. From what I understand he was a horse trader who brougth Belgium horses to American from Europe. I'd appreciate any help in finding this info.

I don't think the civil war was the problem. It was 2 grown women and one older man. It appears the husband/son went on to marry someone else.

The biggest thing during that decade was the Civil War. I know there were units from Iowa and with a lot of the battles being in PA.... how did that impact the family?
