All my ancestors are from Iowa. Some of the first settlers of Des Moines and I have family from Lee County, mainly Keokuk and Montrose. Names in Lee: Maxwell, Johnston, Wahrer, Thornburg, White, Fiedler, Perry, Hammer, Hildwein, Ogden, Smith. Names in Des Moines: Newcomer, Mills, Scott, Lamb, Winterberg, Vischer.

I don't have too many ancestors from Iowa but the ones I do have are: Arthur Danford DeLancey born in Cedar Rapids on July 27, 1880; his father Robert Marion DeLancey born in Dubuque on Oct. 04, 1854, married in Waubeek on Oct 26, 1879 to Elizabeth Gertrude Hill; Elizabeth Smith born May 06, 1824 in Ohio, died in Prairieburg Iowa on Nov. 26, 1880, she married James Starr DeLancey; Gertrude L. Harrison born in LeGrand on Jun 04, 1883 and her father Mr. Harrison; William O. Osborne born on Oct 9, 1845 somewhere in Iowa, married on Aug. 21, 1864 in Manatheka to Mary Hooker who was born on Mar 19, 1848 somewhere in Iowa (or possibly IN); well, it looks like that's about it.

Don't forget to check in with FamilySearch, the record search pilot. It appears they are beginning to transcribe some films. To my surprise I found an elusive lady with name of spouse. This led to correct county, ability to follow in-laws, and son to his demise in 1979 in CA. The film#s are included in the info so you can verify that way. Also found info about several other family members that had eluded me. So, check it out.

Hello,
My family history begins in Germany, Greece, Ireland, England, Denmark, and most everyone settled in Iowa... My family surnames include: Thompson, Allegar, (Hardin County and Pottawattamie County), Lang (Pott. Co.), Poulos (Pott. Co.) and Carlin (Pott Co.). My cousin and I have been unable to find our ggreatgrandfather (James H. Carlin) whose last known Iowa address was in Knoxville, IA at the inebriate hospital... He disappeared around 1926 and was never heard of again... He had been married to his German born wife, Catherine Emma Lang and they had lived in Council Bluffs, IA, and raised five children.
I tried calling Knoxville historic society and they checked the cemeteries to no avail.... Anyone have any suggestions on obtaining records for Knoxville treatment hospitals in the 1920's?? Thanks for any responses!,

Barbara, Ancestry has images of the Iowa state census records. You have to go to the listing of databases. I have gotten loads of info from these state census images.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I can find a copy of the 1895 Iowa State Census? I need to look at the Census to find who my grandfather and his siblings were living with then. I have found a "record" on Ancestry, but it only gives me two of the children's names and the township they were living in. Two of them were quite young when their mother died and the father had left or died before that. I am trying to find out if they lived with their older brother, if neighbors took them in, or what. Thanks for any help

I am in California, but am contacting the Genealogical Society tomorrow. Our public library here has a huge genealogical section, time to visit again now that I know what I am looking for. Thank you again for your help
I have family in Linn, Cedar, Muscatine, Scott counties. My father and his siblings were born and raised in a small town in Muscatine County. Since there were 13 of them, they were a good portion of the population at the time....

Linn County has a genealogical society. They might do a search and copy a census image for you for a small fee. The Iowa Genealogical Society probably has copies of the census and they will do research for you for $15/hr if you are a member or $25 if not which includes copies and postage. What about the library in the area? They also do searches usually for a small fee. It also looks like the Family History Library has the Linn County 1895 Census on film which you could rent if you are close to a Family History Center to view it.

My ancestors are mostly in Muscatine and Louisa counties. I have found both county sites on the IAGenWeb pages to have good information and very helpful if I asked the question.
