Kathleen, glad this helped you! USGenWeb really is a great "tool" and so often underused. As stated before, some counties are much better than others so my advice to everyone is: don't give up if at first one does not turn out to be so great. Records on the county sites are growing each day. I also had made a great connection through it some time ago and was thrilled. Free is always good!

I just have to post here to thank Cheri Hopkins for recommending USGenWeb. There are so many places to search out there, and it seems that you can use up all your available time just trying to find a site that even has any information.

I tried USGenWeb for a family in Iowa in the late 1800s and early 1900s and not only found some great information, but also found someone else who was researching the same family. We have just begun exchanging information, and it is so exciting to see how much our combined efforts have uncovered.

Makes me want to bounce up and down and squeal with someone. So thanks, Thanks, THANKS!

Pro Quest was the original site years ago. You could join and get CD's of diffrent information such as census, Cemetery, buy books etc. Which was great! Reasonable prices. Then Ancestery bought them and the name changed to Heritage Quest. You cannot buy CD's and other items anymore. The site is great I use it and the LDS site.

Thanks for the information about the 'out-of-district' card offered by Mid Continent Public Library. I live in France and have been looking for something like this for a long time. Many other libraries offer e-cards, but you have to produce photo ID showing residence in the state.

Are you looking for access for Heritage Quest which I think is a ProQuest holding of sorts? Access to Heritage Quest data bases is what is offered by most libraries. If your library does not have it available with your library card, there are others that do. Mid Continent Public Library, Independence MO offers an out of state library card for 20.00. You also get free access to all their other genealogy data bases too, including Genealogy Bank which you otherwise pay for separately also. It is a very good deal. I am surprised your library does not offer Heritage Quest as most do. Contact me and I will tell you how to get the card from Mid Continent if you are interested and this is what you are looking for. I read that proquest has recently added the Detroit Free Press archives to its library data base. My library doesn't carry this. Does anyone know of a library that carries this database?

You're so right. GenWeb pages are hit or miss, but one should definitely check out the county (if searching USA) GenWeb sites where ancestors lived. It could be a goldmine of info, depending on where.
