Hyllestad

Our family surname "Hyllestad" origin from a farm with the same name that has been in my family for generations. The farm is still there, all though smaller than it was originally, and it's owned by my uncle today. The farm is located in the village Hyllestad in the county of Sogn & Fjorande, Norway.

Old records show that "Hyllestad" is spelled in many different ways, among them "Hyllistada" Hillistadar" and "Hiillestadt".

The meaning of the name "Hyllestad" is not known, but the prefix "hylli" might have it's meaning from a peaceful and graceful place. Some think the prefix might have it's meaning from a cult name, a place sheltered by higher forces.
