Hi, Susi. I do have an Arthena Ruby Stout, born in 1916 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but, unfortunately, she is not connected to the Higgins side of my tree.

Welcome, Willard. Well, so far, we haven't had much luck making connections -- not that we will stop trying. I'm still trying to discover the source in Ireland of my Higgins's. I'll just keep plugging until I do.

My GGrandmother was Bridget Higgins, born c1852 in Quebec, Canada. I believe her parents were John James Higgins and Margaret Creen, both of whom were born c1831 in Quebec. I believe that their parents were born in Ireland; and there is a possibility that John's father was also John Higgins, and was born in Yoghal County Cork. Bridget married Terence Peter Quinn in St. Anicet Quebec and died there 7/22/1921.

If you go to http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/ and enter “Higgins,” you will see “the number and location of households of the name in Ireland 1848-64” and “variant spellings or associated names.” Apparently, we Higgins had spread over virtually all Ireland by that time, making it difficult, without some additional clues, to determine where our ancestors originated.

In my particular case, family lore suggests we came from County Cork, though none of my aunts or uncles can cite a source for this “fact.”

I continue to search for some documentation (death certificate, ship's manifest, etc.) that cites a county of origin, but so far, no luck. And in my case, the name "John Higgins" is a very common one, making my search that much more difficult.

Anyone else have a success story to share? I'd be interested in hearing about the geographic sources of Higgins immigrants, Irish or not, from any who have had any luck tracing back.

Let's see if we can begin to bring some focus to our Hggins efforts.
I don't know, yet, in which country my gggrandfather, John Higgins, was born. I want to do more research on that to prepare for a research trip to Ireland.
I think he may have been Protestant -- my grandfather was originally baptized as a Protestant, then later, at the insistence of his mother, I'm told, he was baptized as a Catholic.
Can anyone offer any clues to where your Higgins originated?
BTW, I was born Michael Higgins. My Dad died when I was seven, my mother remarried and my stepfather adopted me.
