I haven't gotten back that far in my research, but find that those here in Middle TN have various spellings.  Of course, this comes from the different people they dealt with, like census takers.  Seems the census takers did not know how to spell, except perhaps phonetically or by the sounds they heard.  Thus it created various spellings for the same person/family.  I know on my research for the Willoughby name, I have found at least 31 spellings.
