Hi Debbie, Glad you joined and thanks for your U story. In addition to belonging to GenealogyWise, I'm a member of the U5 group at 23andMe -- just for the discussion group. I find it interesting there to see the connections between mtDNA in Scandinavia, northern Germany and England. I hope more people will find this group and add a comment. And add more about U4 if you like.

Thanks for setting up the group. I'm a haplgroup U4, which is a somewhat rare offshoot of U. Brian Sykes gave it the name Ulrike. I don't have a single match in the FTDNA database either at HVR1 or HVR2. My line goes back to a small village by the name of Purton in Wiltshire in the late 1700s.

Welcome to everyone whose maternal lineage is mtDNA Haplogroup U. Research suggests that U is the oldest in Europe, at least 40,000 years ago but likely even older. My mtDNA is U5b and traces to the Lower Elbe River region of northern Germany. Please add a comment about your U maternal line.
