Hi:  my mother's maiden name was Hamilton.  My great grandfather was a George Hamilton from County Down, Ireland b about 1835 or so (it differs on various records).  He fought in the American Civil was in the Scottish Brigade the 79th NY Highlanders.  He abandoned his son to the state (my grandfather Joseph) when his wife & baby daughter died in 1892.  None of the records that I have mention his parents names.

My G-G-G-Grandfather Gavin Major Hamilton settled in Quebec City and his son John Robinson Hamilton and family later settled in the Gaspe area of Quebec. Would love to connect with any other Hamiltons from this family.

Hello to all the Hamilton clan. :) My Hamiltons start with WILLIAM JOHN GILMOUR HAMILTON b. abt. 1831 in Scotland, but maybe Canada. WM. JOHNS. First wife is Maybe, Isabella Scott Robertson, b. abt. 1833 in Chateauguay Que. They had one child Margaret b.1857 in Chat. Isabella died, 1857 in Chat. do not know what became of daur. Margaret.

Second? marriage of WM. JOHN is to Margaret Watt. b.1833 Chateauguay Que. married 1859 in Chat. They had daur. Janet 1860 in Chat. and daur. Mary Gilmour 1861 in Chat.

The next time I find WM.JOHN. He has son, George Alexander Hamilton b. 1870 in Sheenboro Que. Mother Margaret Watt. I do not know what happend to child, can find no death of child or mother. He baptized in Catholic church, but I do not believe they are catholic. As marriage was in Presbyterian church in Chateauguay.

Next I find WM.JOHN. he have son Edward Joseph Hamilton, (my husbands grandfather) with Mary Manning/Manny in Chapeau Que. 1874. Also Thomas Hugh born 1877 in Sheen and Catherine born 1880. Catherine died abt 1900.

My name is Colin John Bromfield Hamilton. I live in the city Elizabeth in South Australia.
I have started to trace my family name of Hamilton. I have been able to go back four generations, thats as far as I can go.
William Thomas Hamilton was born in Dublin in about 1818. I believe he studied in Dublin and became a qualified surgeon. At some time he moved from Ireland to England, Wirral, in the county of Cheshire. A marrage certifcate shows a marrage of William Thomas Hamilton and Mary Knox. The marrage was held in the church of St. Mary's Birkenhead on the 19th August 1846. The union produced a number of children-
John Hamilton about 1846-
WilliamKnox Hamilton about 1850-1910.
Catherine Rosetta Hamilton about 1851-1883.
Charles Andrew Hamilton about 1854-
Henry Bernard Hamilton about 1857-1881.
Edward Lawrence Hamilton about 1858-
James Hans Hamilton about 1861-1897.

Surgeon William Thomas died in Wirral about 1887.

Please, if any of the above rings a bell . Contact me on

Hope to hear from anyone re the above. Regards Colin...

My Hamiltons were from Durham England and Pennsylvania. My grandfather William Edward Hamilton was born in Pennsylvania, when the Johnstown flood hit the family moved back to Durham England, where his parents Were from. When my grandfather was 23yr he returned to the USA.
