As far as I know our Halber isn't short for it. The name uniformly on ship registries is Halber. I've uncovered a couple of Halber records from the JRI project (before it was shut down). So I'm reasonably sure it was Halber from about 1870 on.

Terry it might. To be honest I don't know the exact etymology, of my Halber's, whether it was shortened from something else, or chosen at random. I've traced the Halbers back to Galicia to an area that is now Ukraine, but how they got there I don't know. Jewish records are hard to come by from that area. My gut says this group immigrated out of Germany, but it's only a hunch.
Ok Halbers, I know you're out there. It's an unusual name but there's some of us researching. There are two actual groups of Halbers, a Lutheran set and a Jewish set. I'd love to get people from both sides comparing notes and see if there was a time when we were all one.
