July 2010 Chat Schedule

Monday, July 5, 8:00pm (MST) (Tuesday July 6, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK: Why American Families Migrated, part 1.
For a family life, few acts have such fateful import as that of migration. When we study a particular lineage and inquire into the causes of its metamorphoses – the reversals of fortune, the conversions of faith, the severing of old ties, the adoptions of new cultural modes – the act of migration is likely either to be imminent or to have recently occurred. Consequently, we must give particular attention to migration, to its causes and its results. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Tuesday, July 13, 7:00pm (MST) VOIP and SYPE.
Voice over Internet converts the sound of your voice into a digital signal that travels over the Internet and is received just like an ordinary phone call. In some cases, you can make these calls using a pre-programmed phone that looks and feels just like the phone you're used to. But, more often, you'll be making calls directly from your computer or laptop using Skype.Your Chat Host, Gus Marsh.

The War of 1812 has been referred to by some historians as America’s “forgotten conflict.” The War of 1812 is also called America's Second War for Independence. The ostensible causes of the war were the seizure of U.S. ships and seamen by the British Navy, as well as rapid expansion of the frontier, where British intrigue was blamed for American settlers' troubles with Indians. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Monday, July 26, 10:00pm (MST) Ready, Set, Go! Adventures in Archives for Family Historians
Archives rock! Archives hold many records pertinent to family history. They are full of manuscripts, original works, and family papers. But they can also be a tad cumbersome and difficult to navigate. This is due to the nature of archive finding aids and how information is organized. In this session, learn about what type of information can be found in archives, how to identify particular archives to search, and how archives are organized. The next time you visit an archive, you will be a pro! Your Chat Host, Heather Isbell Kramer.

I have been doing a Pennsylvania chat for the last 5 weeks. Currently I am doing a series about religions of Pennsylvania. Last Sunday was the Amish. Next week will be the Mennonites and after that the Ephata Cloisters and related groups and the last chat will be about John Casper Stoever and the early Lutheran churches. It has been extremely interesting researching these chats. We meet at 9pm eastern (8 central,7 mountain, 6 pacific) on Sunday evenings.

Hi Gena. Glad you have started transcripts of the chat. I understand at this time not all the chats will be transcribed.

Anyway - wanted to thank you.

Suggest adding a link to a 'time' converter website or two on the chat schedule page.
I like: http://www.timeanddate.com
This one has a world clock, a time converter, even a meeting time planner, a Daylight Savings Chart & an abbreviation list**. This could be important as there are, for instance, several ESTs in common use.
I am familiar with world time zones but I use this all the time - just to be sure. We don't want people showing up at the correct time only to find the chat over.

That's great, Gadsby!
