GENTREK: Nov 2011 Calendar for GenealogyWise

Saturday, Nov 5, 8:00pm (MDT) (Saturday Nov 5, 2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Genealogical Spring Cleaning. OK, it isn't spring, but cleaning up your facts and files is one way to renew your enthusiasm for your family tree. However, deciding where to begin is sometimes the most difficult aspect about getting organized. Whether you have an hour or a week available, we have a few "get organized" project ideas to get you started! Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Monday, Nov 7, 8:00pm (MST) (Tuesday Nov 8, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK: Tick Marks on the Census Part 1. Tick marks are a too-common cause of errors in the interpretation of census data. From 1850 forward, unexplained markings are rampant on the microfilmed and digitized pages that we regularly consult. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Saturday, Nov 12, 8:00pm (MDT) (Saturday Nov 12, 2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Why American Families Migrated – Pt 1. For a family life, few acts have such fateful import as that of migration. When we study a particular lineage and inquire into the causes of its metamorphoses — the reversals of fortune, the conversions of faith, the severing of old ties, the adoptions of new cultural modes — the act of migration is likely either to be imminent or to have recently occurred. Consequently, we must give particular attention to migration, to its causes and its results.  Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Monday, Nov 14, 8:00pm (MST) (Tuesday, Nov 15, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK: Tick Marks on the Census Part 2. When we encounter inexplicable entries on a census, it is wise to study the instructions given to enumerators in that particular year.* This is not to say that all census takers followed instructions, of course. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Saturday, Nov 19, 8:00pm (MDT) (Saturday Nov 19, 2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Why American Families Migrated – Pt 2. Last week, we covered the principal causes of migration. This time, we'll look deeper into those causes and their effects.   Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Monday, Nov 21, 8:00pm (MST) (Tuesday, Nov 22, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK: Tick Marks on the Census Part 3. What riddles they pose--those curious markings all over our ancestral census entries! Stray check marks, letters, and numerals prompt us to wonder whether clues lurk behind their cryptic façade. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Saturday, Nov 26, 8:00pm (MDT) (Saturday Nov 26, 2:00pm GMT) GENTREK: Why American Families Migrated – Pt 3. This week we move from the religious and economic to the sociological causes for migration and their ramifications.    Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.

Monday, Nov 28, 8:00pm (MST) (Tuesday Nov 29, 2:00am GMT) GENTREK: Why Attend Genealogical Conferences. The most obvious benefit is that you will LEARN about genealogy. Most conferences have at least one topic in the "beginners" area to help you get the basics to researching research your family. Most conferences will also have some information on researching the "basic" vital records (births, deaths, marriage). Even longtime researchers sometimes learn a tidbit or two in a beginners session. Your Chat Hosts, Jayne McCormick and Dae Powell.
