I just purchased the latest program. I have almost 500 entries on ancestry.com with all the basic information from my family tree. I never uploaded photos or source info..planned on doing that when (now) I decided on a program.

Any suggestions, warnings or concerns about downloading a .ged file from Ancestry.com and then uploading that file as a new "family" in Reunion?

I am looking for advice about the genealogical information I have been gathering. I download files as well as scan files and photographs as source material for my research. Eventually I would like to create dvds of this information for family members. Here is my problem: since software versions change so rapidly, I fear that people in the future will not be able to read my files. Now I could save them as raw files such as jpeg, tiff, etc., but I know of no way to add information about the file…

I was a Family Tree Maker user for ages, but I stopped upgrading around version 8 or so. Having switched to the Mac in 2006, I've finally upgraded to a Mac-native software package (MacFamilyTree) instead of running FTM in a virtual machine.

One thing I miss from FTM is the "relationship calculator" where you can select two individuals and the software will display how they are related (14th great grandfather, 2nd cousins once removed, etc). Is there a Mac program (preferably free) that will…

For the past few weeks, I've been playing with open source genealogy software called GRAMPS. It has been available for Mac users for a while, but it required a complicated installation procedure. The newest version, 3.1.2, is a simple download from here.
For the past few weeks, I've been playing with open source genealogy software called GRAMPS. It has been available for Mac users for a while, but it required a complicated installation procedure. The newest version, 3.1.2, is a simple download from here.

Although it has several things to recommend it, GRAMPS has one big minus: It's a tad buggy. It's not hard for you to trip over something that isn't as it should be. But even that has two good things, though. One, none of the bugs I've found has harmed data. And two, the volunteers writing GRAMPS have a full-featured bug reporting system. GRAMPS traps its crashes (at least all of mine) and guides you to filing a bug report. I found one and it was fixed in just a day or two.

But let's dwell on the pluses. One, it's free. For a full-featured piece of software, you can't beat the price. Two, it has a great range of reports -- you don't get a lot of options for fonts or styles, but you do get several kinds. You can gang them up in a "book," too, which can be useful. And of course, you can import your data through via GEDCOM.

GRAMPS also lets you view your places in a single screen, and here’s where I’m a little excited by the software. I have Brooklyn, N.Y. listed a half dozen ways. New York isn’t abbreviated, or it is without periods, or I have “Kings County” or “Kings Co.” I’m foreseeing a weekend where I can go through and add some standardization to my research.

The interface is decidedly non-Mac-like. And some of its conventions you’ll find infuriating. For example, to copy is control-C not command-C. But GRAMPS is written in Python, a very approachable computer language. It’s not too crazy to imagine someone will dress up the software.

I doubt many Mac users would make GRAMPS their number one software, but it’s definitely worth a look, if only as secondary software to capitalize on the things your primary software doesn’t have.
Farewell fellow MacGenealogists! What do you expect from a new application - which features are important to you?tag:www.genealogywise.com,2009-07-24:3463583:Topic:957442009-07-24T09:44:16.345ZShaehttp://www.genealogywise.com/profile/Shae

So, what do you expect from a new application - which features are important to you?
I know Mark Tucker's great "10 Things Genealogy Software Should Do" presentation and Randy Seaver's newly post "What I want in a Family Tree Program", but both are windows user and can't speak for the mac-community.
iFontium was primarily intended for my private use, to manage our huge source collection (documents, photos, etc) it wasn't designed and developed in communicating with the mac user community. I want to change that for our next application. I know I can't gratify every mac user, but the new application should be developed in communication with the mac user community and this discussion should be a starting point.
2) How do I ADD a new source type. For example, I have a new source that is a California divorce certificate record. I can't figure out from the manual or the Help how to add a new source. And Reunion 9 has so very, very few source types available. (I'm dreaming of RootsMagic and Elizabeth Shown Mills' many citation formats! Reunion 9 is so very lacking!!!)
I appreciate everyone's help. I'm actually pretty software/technically astute, but Reunion is leaving me cold, I'm afraid! Using Reunion to Publish to the Webtag:www.genealogywise.com,2009-07-16:3463583:Topic:609542009-07-16T18:31:58.273ZShaehttp://www.genealogywise.com/profile/Shae
I use Reunion and am in the process of exporting my info to a Rootsweb site - not a GEDCOM file, but want to create my own site. The problem I am running into is that I know nothing about building a website (which with Reunion you don't have to know anything), but I hate their template designs. I have searched for an on-line source for additional template options, but haven't found any.

I want to like MacFamilyTree. I actually started with it but found it too limiting. The new photo tagging stuff in 5.6 is nice though. My biggest gripe against it are that it won't import my Reunion gedcom file without throwing away data. All my custom formatted sources lose most of their data and any tags it doesn't understand are ignored. Throwing away data is an unforgivable act. At least put it into some note field so I can deal with it. Still, the program seems to be evolving quickly and I'd like for it to win me back.

I love Reunion's ability to customize events but the single window with modal dialog approach to editing is awfully cumbersome and since everything is driven from the family group window, adding the same source or photo to multiple people is tedious. But it works, it's been reliable. It just irritates me.

I'd love the ability to geocode events (and make use of geocoded photos) as well as face tagging but until an app gets the genealogy right and has robust gedcom handling, it doesn't matter.

I've tried demos of a couple of other programs including some windows apps, but nothing has encouraged me to switch.

What apps are the rest of you using?
