French dit Names

Do you suffer in agony with a surname stemmed from the French Canadian and their attempt at being noble. If so, wallow in your misery with me. My last name is Grandchamp or the Cornellier dit Grandchamp family from Quebec.Yes , I'm Jenny BIGFIELD

Where do you think the French name Hazeur comes from?

Hi, Jenny

I wouldn't say so much that they were attempting to be noble....  More a matter of distinguishing one person from another, early, and then that family line kept the dit name.  So you get Michel Drouard dit 'the red head', and Michel Drouard dit 'from VilleMarie' and Michel Drouard dit 'the big field'.

Generations later, the lines are all in different places, and you think the last names are 'Roux' or 'Villemaire' or 'Grandchamps'.

Not an attempt to be noble, but sure 'tis enough to make you crazy....

Linda
