I have traced my Fletcher line back to my ggg-grandfather and he was married and bought land from his Father-in-Law that was within 5 miles of where I grew up! I can't seem to get beyond that at this point. :-) My roots don't seem to range far away....just really deep!

My Fletcher family seem to have been in and around the Bury, Lancashire area of England for ever. To date they have been traced back to at least 1766 although that date is a little ' wobbly ' at the moment.

My gg grandfather John Randle Fletcher was High Bailiff of the County Court of Bury from 1860 until his death by suicide in June 1870. It seems that John R. had been a naughty boy and had been caught misappropriating monies that he had been receiving from an deceased estate.

They found him at the bottom of the Ainsworth Lodge ( pond ).

John R. left a widow, Jane nee Summersall, and eight children. One of those of course was my great grandfather Edwin who immigrated to Australia in 1880.

On the other side of the family the Bentleys have been traced back to 1625 with a little more certainty. This family was also in Bury.

My Fletcher family were from Great MarlowBuckinghamshire England. Thomas East Fletcher was my GGGrandfather, his father was Samuel Fletcher who married Ann Wright Lomax.
