finding death records

Hi there,

I've got a question for the group. My grandfather, Will Bobbitt, is buried in a cemetery in east Texas.

Doesn't this cemetery have to have some sort of death record from the state of Texas or from whatever state in which the death occurred in order to bury a person in that cemetery? The state of

Texas has no death record for my grandfather. Are there cemetery records filed with states? Any

help would be appreciated.

what are his dates? Is it possible his name was misspelled and they didn't find it?

William White Bobbitt b Nov 2,1881 d Nov 3,1947 tombstone has name spelled correctly.

Have you checked pilot.familysearch.org? There are images of many death certificates.

Yes I checked that site and have found many death records there. I've had no luck finding a record of Will Bobbitt's death

I find the same in Florida. In one cemetery the "old section" was in a tattered notebook. They have a "volunteer day" when they spend four hours to find the graves and verify the records. One person looks after the "old section", one for the not so old and one for the new. I call the county and they have no idea who to contact. "Ashes to ashes". The web site makes more sense.
The "legal" documents can and should be located before the cemetery. The cemetery is a source for whatever is on the marker and maybe what is written in the record - but there is little continuity.

Generally, no. He may have died in another state and been buried in Texas. State laws vary on records they are required to keep. Also, the date of death may make a difference. There are 17 Will Bobbits listed on find a grave. If he died recently enough to have had a Social Security card, you may be able to track him that way. You may be able to find information through the LDS site.

Hi Frank,
I do know where my grandfather, Will Bobbitt, is buried....Mill Creek Cemetery outside of Linden, Texas.
The state of Texas just couldn't find any record that he died in Texas.

Hey Steve,

I found a William White Bobbitt buried in Cass County. If this is your William, you might try the Cass County Genealogical Society (http://www.atlantalib.com/ccgs/). You also might see if there is a cemetery association for the cemetery. They may have more detail.

As for as the pilot.familysearch.org, I don't believe they have loaded all of the death certificates for Texas loaded yet. Could be wrong though. I could be wrong though.

You might call the county courthouse. They will have records there. The address and phone number can be found at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txcass/resources/vital_records/in.... You can get a copy of his death certificate if they have it. They are rather pricey though.
