I actually have two questions and I hope they have not been asked previously.

The first question is about merging individuals.  I have a person that appears twice in my tree and I want to merge the two entries.  On one branch Joe is the brother of my ancestor.  In another line, Joe marries the sister on an ancestor.  It is definitely the same person.  How do I identify the two Joes as the same person?

My second question is about changing the relationship of two individuals in my tree.  I somehow listed Varchel as the father of Valentine but they are actually brothers.  I then entered Benjamin as the father of Varchel (and grandfather of Valentine) but Benjamin is actually the father of both.  I do not want to delete individuals just change their relationships.  Is this possible?

Victor:

1) BACK UP your file before you do anything. You will be prompted.

When you say "appears twice" HOW are you seeing that?

Does Joe appear twice in the Index (People Workspace, Family View, LH Panel)

If you are seeing Joe twice in a Chart or Report but only listed once in the Index, it's not a duplicate individual, but multiple relationships

2) Incorrect relationships. Detach from the Incorrect Relationship and Attaching to the Correct Relationship.

Do NOT delete anyone.

Does that help?

Yes, Joe appears twice in the index. Sounds like Caroline's procedure will work to merge these two records in to one. It also sounds like the process will merge all the facts and sources.

I also found the Detach command. I did not try it out yet. I assume that once I detach Valentine and Varchel as father and son, I will use the attach commond to re-join them as siblings?
Victor,

From the FTM 2011 Help file (the procedure is the same in FTM 2010):

To merge two people

1. From the People workspace, select the person you want to merge to. This is "individual 1." You can select the person in either the Family tab or Person tab.

2. Click Person > Merge Two Specific Individuals. The Find Person dialog box opens.

3. Locate and select the person you want to merge with individual 1. This is "individual 2."

4. Click OK. The Individual Merge dialog box opens.

5. Select which facts you want to include in the merged record. See Individual Merge.

6. When you have finished setting up the merge, click OK. The two individual records are merged into a single record in your tree. Any relationships connected to each record are kept and the original relationships are marked as the "preferred."

Be sure to make a backup before you do the merger.

I will give it a whirl this weekend. Thanks.
