We are still functioning, but there are so many forums, wiki' and blogs hosted on the Familysearch.org domain that we don't get much attention.

There are many Family search subdomains beyond that which you mentioned. There will be new ones that some communities will know about because they are volunteering to help build the data. The last I heard on "new" family search which is located at https://new.familysearch.org is that it will appear as a Family Tree tab for users with LDS related data.

There is a "new" family search released every three months so stay tuned.

Is this group still functioning? I see posts from 2009, but none since then. Of course, I am new to the site and there may be newer posts and I just don't know how to see them. Anyway, I am an indexer and just love it. But, I am only just beginning to use familysearch to find records about my ancestors. I get confused about all the different familysearches, pilot, new, old, beta. Which one is the real one--the one which has the most recent records?

Michael - you forgot one of the easiest ways to volunteer, at FamilySearch - the Indexing! From www.familysearch.org, just click on the "Index Records" tab, and sign up to help transcribe and index original records to add to the pilot site!

Kathleen and others, there are many ways to volunteer to help with Family Search. Here are 3 ways that relate to the new family search.

1 Volunteer in your local Family History Center,
2 Serve as a Family History Consultant in an LDS Ward or
3 Apply for a part-time (15hrs week) Church Service Missionary supporting new Family Search on the internet from your home.

I am doing the latter and you really learn the hidden mysteries of this very sophisticated database software. Most of the missionaries I met on-line are stay-at-home 50-70 year old ladies. I am impressed that they can learn to use the support tools. The training staff and other missionary leaders are very knowledgeable and patient.

Family Search is awesome. Course I could be biased cuz my grandfather is one of the genealogists who works on the site. :D

I thought I loved FamilySearch - but apparently I'm fickle, because the pilot site is my new favorite thing! It jump started my research like nothing else.

I want to volunteer. Can any current volunteers tell me more about how it works? (How much time you need to dedicate to it, etc?)

The Record Search pilot provides a preview of the next generation of searching and viewing indexes and records. It includes both indexed and unindexed collections. There are currently over 600 million indexed names and images available to search. No registration is required to access the site (http://pilot.familysearch.org).

I've been doing some indexing for Family Search, have used their site for my own research for years. I'm very interested in knowing the latest news about the changes and innovations taking place.
