Hello, I picked up a reference to this site on Google when I did a search on one of my troublesome family members, William Hine Meech  from Ryansin 1825. I see from Ryan Williams posting that he has separate Hine and Meech families. I feel there must be a connection somewhere. Brenda Crowcroft

Hello everybody,

With the exception of my 4x great-grandfather Emanuel Wiles (also known as Robert Emanuel Wiles or Bob Wiles), born about 1829 in Dorset, I descend from all of my (known) Dorset ancestors through another one of my 4x great-grandfather's, Giles Roberts Swain, born April 5th 1822 in Bradpole, Dorset, a son of John Swain, 1790-1864, and Jane Hooke, 1797-1875. John was the son of Joseph Swain, 1764-1840, and Lydia Roberts, 1764-?, and Jane was the daughter of William Hooke, 1770-?, and Mary Swain, ?-?. Joseph and Mary were both children of John Swain, ab.1740-?, and Martha Smallwood, 1744-?, making John and Jane first cousins. I'd explain every single thing in complete detail, like I normally do, but it would go on forever and ever, for I'm proud to say the Swains are one of the largest and most developed branches of my tree.

The Swain family is the main family I'm researching in Dorset, the descendants of my Swain ancestors moved to other parts of England, as well as Canada (more specifically the province of British Columbia, which is where I'm from), Australia, the United States of America, and Wales (more specifically Anglesey).

The surnames that belonged to my Dorset ancestors (most of which were from the Lyme Regis, Axminster, Beaminster or Bridport areas) that I'm interested in are: Swain, Smallwood, Mumford, Roberts, Runnier/Runniard/Runyard, Newman, Gennet, Hooke, and North

The surnames that belonged/belong to descendants of my Dorset ancestors (that weren't/aren't from Dorset) that I'm interested in are: Lorani, Scriven, Clark, Labouisse, Williams, Richards, Meech, Hine, Reynolds, Thorne, Briscoe, Hayward, Piper, Farmer, Robinson, St.John, Bird, Zalaznik, McGrath, Browne, Arculus, Deeley, Candy, Hutchings, Robey, Futcher, Darling, Vinden, Reed, Beard, Burford, Theodore, Nixon, and Hardy.

Hello everyone. Although my GURD family have firm roots in south west Wiltshire, over the centuries small groups moved over the border into Dorset. Initially (in the 16th and 17th centuries) this was mainly due to their renting land from the Arundell family in and around the Donheads, then taking on extra leases in the Dorset parishes also 'owned' by the Arundells (eg. Compton Abbas and Melbury Abbas). Almost all Gurds descend from one couple who lived in Semley (Wilts) in the early years of the 16th century. Thomas Gurd (Goord) died in Semley in 1563 .Our online family tree holds hundreds of Gurds and the many families who intermarried with them. I am looking for members of Dare family that moved to Wootton Fitzpaine Dorset & Whitchurch Canicorum Dorset from Offwell Devon--was there a link to Whitchurch Canicorum prior to this? be very interested to know what Dare family where there and their history.(Charles Dare & wife Susannah nee Dommett). Charles died in WFP in 1850 --his son John married a Sarah Bussell in WFP in 1862--their children were born in WFP & Marshwood Dorset.Happy to share what info I have already.

My Dorset families include GERRARD/JERRARD, RUSSELL, HOSKINS, RAWLINSON and CHILDS, mainly in the surrounding area of Beaminster, Evershot, Brimley, Stoke Abbas, Hooke and Whitchurch Canonicorum. I have good databases on GERRARDs in various areas, and much information on the CHILDS of Melbury Osmund and Melbury Sampford. Will be very happy to share information on these.

I have set up a group 'CHILDS of Melbury and Dorset' for those with links.

We have connections with Chetnole, through John Highmore JEFFERY (born 1814 Yeovil) and his wife Sarah Stone HOUNSELL (born 1824 in Litton Cheney).
Other Dorset names: WARREN, PEARCE, AMOR, WATTS, COZENS.

I have added a discussion about my Winterbourne lines and it is great to see a Dorset group started. I am OPC for Winterbourne Clenstone and just starting to work up my material for Turnworth. Visiting the churches in this area has provided me with many many memories and pictures which I will add to the OPC webpages for Winterbourne Clenstone and Turnworth.
