Welcome

Welcome to the Devon Genealogy group on Genealogy Wise. Please share with us your interests and your problems on the discussion board so that all related discussions are kept in one place where they can easily be found. It is also very easy to go back and edit your discussion posts if you make a mistake. This is intended as a friendly open forum for the discussion of any Devon-related matters.

Genealogy Wise is growing at such a rate that it is difficult to keep up with everything. If you know of any other Devon-related groups please let me know so that I can add a link below. It won't be possible to list surname groups as there will be too many, unless of course someone wants to offer to co-ordinate a new group to list all the Devon surname groups!

Devon has a strong maritime tradition and the photo I have chosen to represent the group is a picture of the sea taken from Hartland Quay on the North Devon coast. The coastline here is particularly treacherous and has been the scene of many shipwrecks. You can share your photos with us on the discussion board. Simply click on the camera symbol in the editing toolbar and your photo will be added to your posting.

I am looking for information on siblings and ancestors of Charles FORD born 1747 Crediton,Devon,England. His parents are supposed to be Charles FORD and Ann HAMMETT married 21 July 1745 Crediton,Devon,England. Did Charles marry his wife Elizabeth in England? Charles was in Maryland by 1773 when his son Samuel was born. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I visited Hartland for the first time in April this year with my mother, it was her 80th birthday on the Easter weekend, my husband, sister and brother and their partners came too. We stayed at Blegberry Farm and loved the area. My mother is a Devonian and I had only found our connection with Hartland, Parkham, Buckland Brewer and Torrington earlier this year, through the Kent family in our maternal line

I've now set up my final group http://www.genealogywise.com/group/northdevonemigrants for all those who have ancestors who emigrated from North Devon. I am collecting biographical information and photographs of as many as I can.

Hi Julia,

I have just explored Ancestry and there is one Public Member's tree with the following information.

Thomas Gribble Bevan born 1833 Lewtrenchard, Devon.

His father is Roger Bevan ( 1801-1842) and mother Mary Gribble ( 1796-1846) both born in Lewtrenchard also.

Thomas appears to have three siblings. Silas ( 1827-1865), Seth ( 1829-1888) and Jane ( 1831-).

Hope this helps.

Can do some more research if you would like.

Best wishes

Sonia Turner

I am looking for the birth town of Thomas Gribble Bevan who was born in Devon in 1831 according to his tombstone which is in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. I have searched many sites but cannot find any information. Can anyone help, please!

If no one has joined it might be easiest to delete the group, copy and paste your formatted copy and start again!

Oh bother that was a sensible idea - is there anyway of altering the names for the groups I've already done? Bucks Mills and Bulkworthy (with ridiculously long names) now added.

Elizabeth, I've added your group. For future reference for everyone when you create a group it's a good idea to truncate the URL eg,

http://www.genealogywise.com/group/bishopsnympton

rather than

http://www.genealogywise.com/group/bishopsnymptondevonhistoryandgenealogy

It'll then be much easier to pass the URL on to other people.

I have just created a group for Bishops Nympton - my OPC Village and home to my Pincombe, Rowcliffe, Manning, Tapp, Blackmoore, and Snow families:
