For anyone interested, I started a genealogy page on Facebook. If interested, look for "Grandchildren of David and Marie Sohier desMarets" and request access. There are over 400 relatives there from many branches and name variations. There are also a couple of research fanatics that like to help...Bob

I have been working on scanning some old family photos and have just uploaded some tintypes for public review. I recognize my great-grandparents but I can't place a lot of the faces. If you have reference of relatives in Northern NJ, or are just curious, please have a look! I'm happy to share the high resolution scans (for non-commercial use of course). Thanks! http://web.mac.com/mnovakdesign

I am decended from David Demarest and Marie Sohier though their son David whose daughter Rachel married Andries (Andrew) Van Orden. My maiden name is Van Orden.

I am currently trying to verify some clues I found that indicate I may be descended from David and Marie a couple more ways, but I am having trouble verifying some information that would finish connecting the links for me. If any one can help, please let me know. Here is where I'm snagged:

My father's mother was a Havens and the Havens family tree has been traced to Elijah Kayhart who married Elizabeth Leach. Elizabeth Leach was the daughter of Thomas Leach, and Priscilla. I have just recently tried to find more about Priscilla and found that her last name was Ackerman, and possibly daughter of David Ackerman (b. 1764 & gr gr grandson of David and Marie Demarest through their son Jean) and Willimpse Bogert.

I am having trouble verifying the link between Priscilla and David. Does anyone know of a source that will verify this for me? I would greatly appreciate it!

There seems to be alternate given names for Priscilla: Sietje, Crietje and Cecilia. Priscilla was born 28 March 1792 in New York (from what I have seen) and died 22 August 1881 in Montville, Morris Co, NJ.

Thanks for any help anyone may be able to pass along.

It looks like Family Tree DNA will be having another Facebook sale starting a week from tomorrow, on Friday, April 15th. Anyone thinking about DNA testing should probably follow what happens with FTDNA that day. They will probably post a coupon code and an explanation of the sale on their Facebook page.

Since posting the last message, I've learned that they are also discounting the Family Finder test for customers who have already done other tests. I think I need to take advantage of that one.

Is there anyone out there who has contemplated DNA testing to help them with their genealogy? Family Tree DNA has just started a 24 hour sale on new test kits for many of their tests, including their 37 marker Y chromosome test and their Family Finder test. I am a Demarest descendant, and currently have Family Finder test results on order for 2 family members who are also Demarest descendants. I would love to be able to compare results with other other Demarest descendants, and to see more Demarest males do Y chromosome DNA testing. I would recommend ordering testing through the French Heritage DNA project:

To get the discount, people need to use a coupon code that anyone can find on the following Facebook page. You do not have to be a member of Facebook to view the page or use the code. I'm not, and I was able to access the page:

Bob, thank you for posting. Yes, Sterling sounds familiar, and I remember that we did travel in that direction to attend the festival. I'll have to look for you if I get to that festival again.

I'm also sorry that it has been a while. I was supposed to post some information from documents about my own line, and have been so busy that that hasn't happened yet. Someday!

Sorry it's been a while. Armondo, there is in fact a branch of the family that uses de Marez. Louis Trip de Marez is mentioned in the American family books. There are three reported Arms used by different branches.

Kirsten, You probably went to the Sterling Festival which is NE of Rochester near Fulton, NY. My wife and I go a couple of times a summer. Fully dressed in period outfits of course...

Kirsten, Thanks for started this group. My great great grandmother was Sarah Maria Demarest - daughter of John Demarest of Ulster and Sullivan County NY.

No, I have not joined the Demarest Genealogical Society. That section of the website was never completed and I forgot to ask about in my e-mail. A new book was planned for publication in 2004 but assume there were overwhelming problems. Look what we've run into for problems in the listing for just one family!
