Comment by Penny Holt on February 22, 2012 at 12:55pm Your Culley's are a long way from the ones that I am researching. Culley is a name that is most common around the Norwich area of Norfolk. If you are looking back to the 'Old Country', that might be where you want to aim your compass.
Comment by Penny Holt on February 22, 2012 at 12:53pm You Culley's seem to be a long way away from the ones that I am researching. I can tell you that Culley is a name that was most common around the Norwich area of Norfolk. If you are looking back at the 'Old Country', that would be where I would consider aiming my compass.
Comment by Yvette Porter Moore on February 22, 2012 at 11:15am Welcome to the Culley Group Penny! I am very unsure of where my Cully/Culley's orginated. I do know however that my 3x Grandfather, William H. Culley was born in Craven County, NC and he and his brother were apprenticed to a William Dove approximately 1814.
They were free people of color. I am trying to find their roots, as I believe that it started in Virginia, but need more information. I believe that my William H. Culley's mother had children by the Slave Master/Plantation Owner.
Heard we are of Irish Descent or from England...Not sure.
Comment by Penny Holt on February 22, 2012 at 11:00am I'm researching CULLEY in Norfolk and later Cabridgeshire. I'm especially interested to find a photo of John Charles Vandeleur Culley who died in the l990;s in Little Shelford, Cambridgeshire. Happy to share research.
