I'm looking for Crosses in the southern part of Davidson County, NC. I have a mystery David Cross b abt 1806 who married a Susannah Goss. They are buried there. One of their children moved to southern MO in the mid-1800s after her marriage, with some of her mother's relatives. But I have had no luck making clear connection with Crosses in the area. Advice?

John, father of Jesse, Robert and Thomas Cross, was supposedly born in 1767 in NC and died in 1823 in GA. I say supposedly because I have nothing to show this as fact except others research and they did not cite their source.

There has been some speculation, often reprinted as fact, again without citation, that John married a Indian woman named "Manoish".

There were many white men who married Indians and it is hard to research those lines since our Native American ancestors did not keep written records like "we" did..bible records, wills, etc.

There has been found, many years ago, a Will dated March 18, 1823 (Jasper Co., GA) for a John Cross, who did not list his children as they were minors. We know that because he states "...such time as my oldest son arrives to twenty one years of age then...".

So my John Cross had 3 sons, Thomas b. 1789, Jesse (my line) b. 1798 and Robert b.1804. By 1823, Thomas, the oldest son, is 34 so he can't possibly be this John Cross' family.

In the Will, John names his wife, MANICHA. It is possible that "Manoish" is a corrupted version of her name.

Even if it were the same woman, there is no proof she is Indian and there is certainly no proof contained within the Will that this is our John Cross, father of Jesse Cross, whose oldest brother was 34 by 1823.

I also wish my beloved wife to make sale of the land I drew and purchase another piece that is improved that she may be enabled to raise my children.
According to the early census, in order for these two to be added, my ancestor William Stephen Cross (b. Oct 1826) and his brother Henry (b. 1833), would have to be removed because the early census only show 1 child in each of these age groups.

FAMILY HISTORY OF CROSS NAME
(As dictated by William Gus Cross at his home near Waldron, Arkansas Nov 16, 1934)

Jesse Cross was born in 1797 in Habersham County Georgia, and later owned land in Catoosa Co, Georgia. He died in 1881 near Winfield, Arkansas, and was buried in the Seahorn Cemetery near Winfield. Robert Cross, brother of Jesse, had a son, James. Thomas Cross, another brother of Jesse had a solid breast-bone down over his stomach.

Jesse Cross married Celia Dover (1st wife). The family lived at or near Ringgold, GA. The following children were born to this union:

1 Henry Cross, died in Texas
2 Steven Cross, died in Texas
3 Mitchell Cross, born 1835, died at Winfield, Ark in 19??. He had 1 boy and 2 girls (Mrs Seahorn [? hard to read] and Mrs Patterson).
4 Mahaley Cross, died single about 19 years old.
5 Miles Cross, buried in Mt Ida Cemetery between D------? and Locksburg,Ark.
6 Elsberry Cross, died in Texas
7 Rachel Cross, married __ [no first name] Smith, killed in war: then married Drury Singleterry and lived in Ringgold, GA.
8 George Washington Cross, the youngest child, was a wagonmaker. He had 3 boys & 3 girls. He died in ___? [looks like probably a town, but not readable]

All the sons served in the Confederate Army except Miles who made shoes for the soldiers.

---------

It is my personal belief that the reason Henry and Wm Stephen came to Texas in the first place was to escape the brewing conflict of the Civil War. I say this because they show up in the 1860 census for Hardin Co TX and my grandmother told me stories of how the Cross men hid in the thicket with other men to evade the soldiers when they came. The women would bring food to the woods and leave it. They would hang a red rag out to let them know it was safe to come in.

But the point of Gus's note to his son is that Gus was speaking of his father's brothers and sisters. Surely Gus would have known if he had an Uncle Thomas Jefferson or John Robert!

Again, I do think these two Cross boys, Thomas Jefferson and John Robert, as somehow connected but not as the sons of Jesse Cross. If someone can produce something to show otherwise, I am always willing to make corrections and additions because my goal is to be factual, not right.

The only other way these boys could possibly be son's of Jesse Cross would be as illegitimate with another woman. This did happen so it is possible. How would we know without some document or letter?
Need help with this one: Shadric F. Cross m.
Also, John and Clara had a daughter together, named Jacquelyn Carol Cross on 1-6-1951.

John and Clara got a divorce in May 26, 1953 and was married on 11-21-1919. I know that John L Cross got custody of Jacquelyn Carol Cross, but then gave her away at 8 months of age to a man named Edward Obrien.

I am looking for information on a young girl I believe might be my g grandmother. In 1870 the Ebenezer Ross Fenimore family, who adopted Jennie Cross, was living in Andrew County, Missouri. Also in Andrew County (in a boarding house) was a "domestic" by the name of Pheba Cross (32, Indiana). Pheba had two children, Jennie (4) and Willie (6), both born in Missouri. I believe this to be the Jennie who was adopted (between 1870 - 1875) by the Fenimores, who later married my g grandfather…

There is no spouse listed for Pheba, and I am unable to locate Pheba in the 1860 or 1850 census. Any information on Jennie, Pheba or Willie would be greatly appreciated. I have several documents supporting the above theories.
Is there anyone here with access to Henry Co., GA records?tag:www.genealogywise.com,2009-11-18:3463583:Topic:2073852009-11-18T00:35:16.167ZSherry Hightowerhttp://www.genealogywise.com/profile/SherryHightower

NOTE: This is another deed that I am curious about. This is where Robert Cross is selling the property that he had loaned to his parents JOHN & NANCY CROSS. Was there actually a 2nd Robert Cross that witnessed this deed or is this simply a mistake in the abstract?
Many thanks for any help,
Hello Cross family members!

I'm hoping someone out there might be able to solve the question that has confounded our family for many, many years!!

It is truly a MYSTERY - where did Willie Cross (b: abt. 1851) come from?? Who were his parents, his siblings?? Some records show he was born in GA, some show TX and one even shows FL. He married Casalonia 'Cassie' Richey Sanders on February 24, 1878, Falls County, and had two children, William Franklin Cross (my grandfather) and Sallie Richie Cross…

It is truly a MYSTERY - where did Willie Cross (b: abt. 1851) come from?? Who were his parents, his siblings?? Some records show he was born in GA, some show TX and one even shows FL. He married Casalonia 'Cassie' Richey Sanders on February 24, 1878, Falls County, and had two children, William Franklin Cross (my grandfather) and Sallie Richie Cross Marlin. (The 1880 census for Falls County shows Willie and wife 'Carrie', we've discovered this is wrong, her name was definitely Cassie). When the children were very little, all records of Cassie disappear, Willie shows up next in Conroe where he married Jennie Maines. She later married Jackson Young but there's no death or divorce information for Willie. That's the MYSTERY - WHO WAS WILLIE, WHERE DID HE COME FROM and WHAT HAPPENED TO WILLIE CROSS???

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thank you,
