Hi Candy,
As someone who has spent 30 years in Computers and done pretty much what one can with them I would recommend a HP Laptop. I have purchased nearly 20 HP laptops of various specifications for my employer over the last couple of years and find they are well built with a decent specification and have had good reliability. The price is amazing for what you get. DO take advantage of buying the 60 day trial MS Office 2007 deal that comes installed on it. (you'll see more when you read up on it). Heres a link to the HP550 model from a reputable supplier:

Any questions come back to me

Candy, not sure how much you wanted to spend but I would want at least 2G of memory and at least 160G of hard drive space. You also need to decided how big of monitor you want. The standard is 15.4 in. I was looking to up grade and went to best buy and seen a nice Dell for 499 but there was one that was 398 also that would serve your purpose if genealogy was you main interest in a laptop. Both Dell and Toshiba are good computers. Check around and price check. Every now and then WalMart even has good buys on computers.

I dont' really have a computer problem necessarily - but I am looking at the purchase of a laptop for my birthday. I know I don't want some monster machine with every bell and whistle known to man on the thing. It's main use is for my genealogy program (PAF), need internet capability, email - would like my chat program to be able to run also. Considering a web cam - but not sure yet.

My idea is that I don't want to be strapped to my desk to do research, and I can take it with me on my field trips.

Can anyone help me with specifics as to what I should be looking for / what I'm going to need? Preferences - recommendations??

Hi Debbie, I am somewhat computer savvy but there has been two times that I almost lost all my many years of work, but thank God to a computer geek he saved it both times, which was years ago. After the second time, I start to back up my file on a cd. Now I not only back up my work on a CD regularly, I also have it on a external hard drive and a passport elite (which I do my whole system). I do not plan to go through the stress of possibly losing almost 40 yrs of work.
