This group was created for people who research their families on the computer, and then all of a sudden it crashes, or the computer does not work, or the scanner will not scan the picture. This group was formed to make sure people can use their p.c.

I have a compaq laptop. (Couple of years old)
I have wireless AT & T with my main computer, and the laptop worked fine for a while. Now I can not get on line with it UNLESS I PLUG IT IN TO MAIN COMPUTER. Then it works fine.
I am not sure if I messed something up trying to get online at motels, or what. Bell South (AT & T) claims NOT THEM, but then they always do.
Is there a setting?

I have a question. I installed "Family Tree". I think it was the 2006 version. I got it free from the local library. I have entereed info on over 700 people, plus a lot of "Obits". So I have a lot of time invested. My computer crashed. I need to get on line to add some programs that I've lost. For example I need to get to MS to down load "DirectX" for some simple games I have and I am getting error messages on the "Family Tree" stating that no changes can be saved and the pdf files cann't be reproduced. I am assuming that if I re-install "Family Tree" my genealogy info will be usable again. Am I close?

It will cost you but if you have as much work as I had in my family file it is worth it.

patsy, if you still have your hard drive there are times when the information on the hard drive is not lost and can be retrieved. So you might want to see if they can be saved. I had it happen to me took my computer to a computer store and try saved my files for me. From that I now have it on my laptop, but also on an external hard drive and on a passport drive which i back up at least once a week and sometimes twice a week depends on how much work i have done on my files.

The HP 550 has 2GB RAM; 160GB Hard Drive; wi-fi; DVD Read/Write (Lightscribe); SD memory card reader; Decent graphics and speakers (for a laptop); its fast; has MS Office 2007 (Discount price); weighs about 7lb; has a 15.4 inch screen; three USB ports; and a one year return to base warranty. Google it and you will find all this costs around £400 including VAT.

I believe the sony are over priced for what they are, you are paying for the name. For laptops any of the main companies are pretty fine for casual work (ie genealogy, internet, web cam). Companies like DELL, HP, TOSHIBA are good quality from what I have used either at work or at home.

It all depends on what you want on it. Like most have said you can go Intel or AMD.

Then you have to break down how big of screen, do you want to be lugging around a 20inch or will a 12-14 inch do?

I also agree with another user dont go below 2G of memory. Get a decent size hard drive (not a big deal, you can get externals anyway and are better for backing up stuff away from the computer.) I would say about 5-600 would be max for a "internet" laptop (at least thats what I would spend. I would also look online at stuff like slickdeals, or techbargins to see what is discounted. Dell does alot of discounts online, or you can even look at the refurbished.

What I use now is a NetBook from Asus (EEE PC), small 8.9 inch weighs 2lbs and cost 250$, it has a 4G hard drive, with 16G secondary drive, with 2G of memory. Its small, pretty fast, and light.

Each to their own but with all due respect there are several factors that can affect battery life and without going into detail or wishing to offend anyone here, I would not recommend that Battery life is a primary basis for consideration. The recommendation I have made is because when people ask me to build them a PC or recommend I.T. kit, the first thing I ask them is what do they want it for;and based on Candy's request, my response is that HP produce some good, mid-range decent Laptops, provide good Warranty, and I cannot fault them. FWIW There's no real problem with Lenovo (formerly IBM) either but they are now more orientated towards the business sector and less easy to deal with (we used to use these); nor will you find any real problems with a Toshiba or even a Sony VAIO (although the latter does not seem to have the credit they used to have.)

I own an Acer and the battery last twice as long as my son's HP. Wouldn't trade my acer for a dell or hp
