I am  just doing research my mothers side of the family. Her mother is Edith Caudill and her father is Paul Martin. My mother told me we are descendants of Leroy Caudill. My grandmother Hattie Caudill lived in WV.

Hi, everyone - wow, that's sure a bunch of Caudill's.

I am not of direct Caudill descent (that I know about)

but am probably related to some of the Letcher County

ones as my grandmother was a first cousin of (author)

Harry Caudill's mother. My grandmother's name was

Suzie Day and her mother's family were Polly's.

I suppose you know that a lot of Harry Caudill's

books were donated to the library in Whitesburg,

including quite a few genealogy references. He

discusses possible origins of the name Caudill

in his most well-known book "Night Comes to

the Cumberlands". 

(but I bet you knew that...)

We are all cousins. My great grandfather was Isom Caudill who was the brother of both a Mahala Caudill and a Henry Caudill. (as well as Elizabeth, Mary Ann, John (married Margaret "Peggy" Creech) Ben, and Obadiah. However, this Isom's father and mother were James Caudill and Mary Fields. Isom (this one) married Pheriba Day and then Polly Calhoun. They were my mother's grandparents. They lived in Breathitt County near Jackson, KY. Next door, lived the Risers whom two of the Caudill boys married. Rosalie Risner married James Caudill and they were my grandparents. Isom lived to be 98. He has a daughter that the cousins and I are trying to find. She should be about 60. (He was spry) I don't even know her name but my Uncle Joe put her through college. The cousins are all Bachs (Backs). Rosalie Risner's mother was a Back. It is all very complicated. We all come down from Stephen, I believe.

My own name is Pherbia Ann as was my mother's. However, it came from Feraba, Feraby(?) which I have been told is from the Cherokee, Feraba Luna. Who know?

I can't help you with your line but we are distant cousins. My Great Grandmother was Mahala Caudill ca 1844 - 1905. Mahala was born in Johnson County, KY to Isom Caudill and Nancy Bailey. Isom was son of Thomas Caudill who married his cousin Jenny (Jane) Caudill. Both trace back to your Stephen Caudill.
