Jennifer, Rachel was born in Pennsylvania - I think it was a stopping point on her family's migration from Long Island NY to Sangamon County, IL (where she married, had 2 daughters, and died). The Carman family from Long Island traces back to the immigrant John Carman (founder of the Hempstead settlement) and his wife Florence Fordham. I don't think there is a definitive consensus on where in England John Carman was born - I have Bishops Stoke Parish in Hampshire, but I've seen Hemel Hempstead listed by others.
My ancestress, Rachel Carman, was a client of Abraham Lincoln: he was her attorney for her divorce from her husband, Jacob E. Roll, on the grounds of desertion. She then married a cousin of his, Pierson Roll, and had 2 daughters - one of whom I descend from.
