Hello, Jennifer, I am beginning research on the Carman line from New Jersey in the 1700-1800's.

Jennifer, Rachel was born in Pennsylvania - I think it was a stopping point on her family's migration from Long Island NY to Sangamon County, IL (where she married, had 2 daughters, and died). The Carman family from Long Island traces back to the immigrant John Carman (founder of the Hempstead settlement) and his wife Florence Fordham. I don't think there is a definitive consensus on where in England John Carman was born - I have Bishops Stoke Parish in Hampshire, but I've seen Hemel Hempstead listed by others.

Jeanie, do you know where Rachel came from? My Carmen ancestors are from the Northumberland and Lincolnshire area?

My ancestress, Rachel Carman, was a client of Abraham Lincoln: he was her attorney for her divorce from her husband, Jacob E. Roll, on the grounds of desertion. She then married a cousin of his, Pierson Roll, and had 2 daughters - one of whom I descend from.
