Canadian Veterans

Do you have ancestors that were veterans in the Canadian army, air force, or navy? Canadian servicemen and women have served in the Fenian Raids in the 1860’, the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War.

Commonwealth War Graves Commission http://www.cwgc.org/
Library and Archives Canada above.
Legion Magazine: Last Post: Dealth Notices. Most info here relates to servicement who passed away after January, 1989.
For a transcript of a veteran who served in the Second world War you can send away to Archives Canada for copies of their service records. Should you need help getting them let me know and I will guide you through the process.
This is a short list. There is a great deal of information out there.

Also keep in mind that for both World Wars you might also have to access British records as it was not unusual for servicemen to be loaned out to the different services. My uncle, for example was with the R.C.A.F.; however, he flew his Hurricanes with the 65th squadron which was a British outfit, and my father’s Lancaster had a R.A.F. serviceman as co-pilot on his last mission over Germany.

Joan - I should do that too. I am surprised that the service record would be so extensive. Was he in the service a long time before the injury?

My grandfather was a war amp from WWI. He was wounded at Ypres on October 12, 1917, just a month after arriving in France. His right leg was amputated at the thigh on the same day at the Casualty Clearing Station. It was almost a year before he was able to return to his home town in Edmonton, Alberta.
I ordered his entire service record from Canadian Archives, a little costly for all the copying but well worthwhile.

My Grandfather was killed in Ypres, Belgium during WWI. He was with a Canadian group. I have three uncles who searved in the Canadian Navy during WWII.
I am working on their records and will return with specifics later. Grandfather was a Ramsay from Melrose, Scotland. Three uncles were Stannard, Brown and Brown. The latter served on Corvettes.

That Sue is difficult. Since he went AWOL in the 1960's any information is still covered by privacy acts. By writing to Veteran Affairs you might and I say might get some information.

should probably put this in brick wall group as well...trying to find any info on my uncle Alban Bernard born in 1926 or 27. He was in either the Canadian Army or Air Force and went awol sometime in the early 60's. He is my mother's older brother and sure would like to be able to tell her that I have found him or at least some info on him.....don't know if you can help with this one or not

my father served in the Canadian Air Force but never saw active duty. He was stationed in Churchill, Manitoba and I have a few pictures of that time if you would like to see them.

This being a Canadian outfit of course there was hockey. The photo is of the R.C.A.F. team that was put together in Quebec City in 1943 to pay an exibition game against some N.H.L. all stars. I haven't yet found out the score.

For anyone researching WWII veterans from the Hamilton/Toronto, Ontario area this link may be beneificial "The Hamilton Spectator and It's Archive". It was nice for me to find references and pictures of my father. I had never seen these before.
